R60 Interior Rattles
Interior Rattles
I have had my CM All4 for a couple of months now. My only issue is that there are a couple of annoying rattles that only occur when driving on certain road surfaces (it does not happen on nice smooth roads, but these are difficult to find in Seattle!). I need to get my wife to drive while I crawl around and listen to try to identify where exactly these are coming from. It seems that one is coming from above (sunroof trim?) and others from the dash.
Has anyone else experienced this? Am I being too picky or should I make an appointment at the dealer to have this looked at?

I have a small rattle every once in awhile. It is in the drive side passenger door. But it only rattles under 25mph and it isn't all the time.
I'm not too worried about it right now. I've only had it a week, it might just need time sometime to settle in.

Yes, I also found these types of rattles (seat belt connectors rubbing on the pillar, cup holders rattling in rail). The vibration rattles I am hearing are soething else. I need to at least figure out where these are coming from as it is driving me nuts!
I have the slightest rattle that sounds like a BB or pea rolling in the dash, when I come to a stop. It's very soft but very annoying, and it's a long roll.

I started a thread under the Problems and Issues. So there are a few things I have learned. The window creaks come from the paint surface rubbing on the flocking. The dealer put a thin strip of teflon tape on the metal, invisible when the doors are closed, and it fixed it.
The dash rattle in the middle may be the speedo. Apparently it is the speedo itself (the interior needle) and not the unit against the dash. They said there is a tech bulletin and it is not fixable at this time.
The ones that drive me crazy are on the right door or dash, somewhere around the front door handle. Certain spoken word things through the HK audio set off the buzz I'm hearing, and it also happens over rough pavement.
The weird thing is my passengers in the front seat can't hear what I'm hearing...ever. When I slam the front passenger door, I do hear a prolonged "twang" like something is loose in the right front door pillar near the bottom, and then again, there is something SOMEWHERE near the right HK speaker or door handle. I think I may have the dealer listen to the vibration as the speaker creates it, just to isolate it, and it may be the speaker itself.
The seatbelt rubber inserts in the door pillars do vibrate, as well.

The rattles just keep on coming. Tonight the speedo rattled incessantly, the console on the headliner started rattling, and now the rail itself in the rear is rattling (not the accessories). Sounds like I'm in an old cargo van.
Ours too. I put a rolled up piece of paper in the flap to keep it from making contact and it still rattles. I don't want to remove it until I have exhausted all other options because it is there for some reason.
I'm in the same boat... lots of random rattles when I'm not on a perfectly smooth surface. I've driven Chryslers for ever.... and the fit and finish of my Mini reminds me of the K-cars and Daytonas my parents drove in the 80s. I'm amazed at how much the turn signals move around when you touch them. Hopefully this car will be durable.... initial quality isn't that great.
Similar/Same thing?

Don't recall the exact thing at the moment, but something along the lines of a tube in the sunroof frame that holds some cables, and it was the cables in that tube causing the vibration noise.
Apparently with anything significant with the sunroof, they replace the entire thing in one piece, which is what they did in my case. Probably been a couple hundred odometer miles since it was replaced, and no sign/sound of it since. So appears to be resolved.
If this is what's needed in your case, be warned they had the car for a week to get the part in and install. And make sure they schedule you a MINI loaner instead of the crappy Enterprise rental (which I had on the first visit.) They (Seattle MINI) use Enterprise when all their MINI loaners are taken.
Good luck, hope this helps.
Oxford...Mine doesn't have a sunroof, and I think many of these rattles are door and dash related. I believe the speedo with the nav screen is problematic and will always rattle. It is disconcerting how many just seem to crop up out of nowhere. Love the handling of the car. Always want to go drive somewhere, but I want the car to not feel like a Yugo in fit and finish.
Oxford Green - Thanks for the comments and suggestion on the loaner. I don't want the Enterprise rental! I will take it in soon, but just want to try and figure out where the noises are coming from first. It does sound like some are coming from either sunroof or console above. However, as Cosmic Blue indicates, other rattles appear to be coming from the dash/speedo/display area but I just can't pinpoint the source!
Don't know if you sorted this out, but it could be the speaker.
Cosmic Blue - While sitting in the passenger seat today, I listened to the speedo and clearly heard the vibration coming from behind the nav screen. This is the most irritating of the rattles I have been experiencing and the only one that I can now pinpoint. Thanks again for pointing it out. You mentioned that there is a "tech bulletin" on this issue. Does this mean that they hopefully plan to come up with a fix?
Thanks I could not figure out where Woody wood was hiding, because it didn't make the sound all the time.. I thought it was the kids car seat. Time to make a appointment
Rattle Resolved !!!
My Countryman All4 started to rattle on the passenger side dash at around 1500 miles. I haven't had much time to deal with it but finally spent some time today trying to find it. I took everything that wasn't bolted down out of the car just to make sure it wasn't something dumb.
Tonight, I opened the hood and looked around. I opened the battery compartment cover and voila. There is a red plastic cap covering the positive battery terminal that had sprung open and was resting against the inner firewall.
I snapped it back into place and took the same bumpy ride that I take every morning where I could normally hear the rattle. There is now total silence! It feels and sounds like a new car again.
I hope this helps others that have been annoyed by the noise like I have. Let me know if it does.

I'm going to check on this tomorrow. But I still have issues in the right B pillar. Also, my back passenger seat has some "give" in the seat back, so going over bumps knocks it into the back area, making the sound like the seatbelt hitting the plastic. Front passenger seat has a vibration inside the seat back. I hope to tackle each of these. The window creak is gone due to the teflon tape. The speedo I think will always rattle. Headiner console vibrates also. Very frustrating. If the car wasn't such a blast to drive, I don't know what I'd do.
Bobby,
I just got my Countryman S about 4 weeks now. I've exactly the same rattle noise problem when car hitting the uneven surface. The noise sounds like rain drop hitting the roof top. I am checking with local dealer on how to resolve this issue. My Countryman does not have sun/moon roof.
Have you got your noise resolved?
Cheers,
Jerry
