hill holder

Today i rolled up to a step driveway exit. Still trying to match my rpm to first gear launch and not roll backwards. So when i let the clutch out at what i expected to be the correct rpm i stalled. Tried again at a higher rpm. Stalled again. I think the hill the hill holder wouldn't disengage with the clutch release. Doesn't seem right. Had i not been able to roll back i would have used the safety brake. Any ideas?

Would be nice if you could disable this feature. I know how to hill hold with the clutch. Not a big deal with the auto, but my next car will be manual and sometimes these nanny features are annoying.

I find if parked on an incline with the front of the car facing down, and shifting to reverse, that the rear brakes stick for a second. No idea if it's hill hold or parking brake - I would assume the later. I have an automatic trans.

The hill holder seemed to be really noticeable at first, but once the car started breaking in, it has not become as annoying.

Just wait two seconds, and the hill holder will release. Then you can proceed as if it was not there. I have not found that too difficult.

Mine definitely does not stop me from going forwards. Once I begin to release the clutch, it doesn't seem to be getting in the way, even if less than the 2 full seconds have elapsed.

I do find that uphill, the engine takes a relatively high rev to go. 1500 rpms does not have sufficient power to take the car uphill at all.

The hill holder wierded me out at first, I end up with a burnt clutch smell first few times it engaged. After 2000kms with the car, I've gotten used to it.

Hill holder works backwards too. i.e. if I'm parked downwards on a steep incline and I need to back up the incline. I was surprised.

I have had a similar issue. Several other Mini owners/drivers have had the same problem. The car seems to make a little lurch and turn off. It seems to happen on small hills. Running the RPMs up may help but not always.

Does this sound familiar to any of those out there who have had hill holder problems? Anyone find a solution? I had my dealer check my clutch but they said they did not find anything.

Can always disable temporarily by...

turning DSC off.

When in doubt, more revs...just like you were starting out on a...hill. That's perhaps the part it takes getting used to--for two seconds feels like you are on flat ground but of course you aren't.

I honestly think that's the problem. You're going uphill and need to rev accordingly, but the feedback you're getting from the car says that you're flat and don't need extra. The first few times I had trouble with it was when the assist released and dropped the car back on the engine but I wasn't revved accordingly.

Now that I'm used to it, I use the two seconds to get the engine ready for the weight of the car, and it works pretty darn well. I'm still not sure I really need it, but as long as the car has it, I'm happy to use it to make my life easier.

You can turn off hill holder assist by turning DSC off? How do you turn DSC off?

I understand about adapting to the new clutch and hill holder and that issue. I also know I have read posts about people having had trouble with the hill holder that as I understood it were repaired.

We have two 2011 Mini's with the hill holder. My son and I have no trouble with the wife's MCS but do have regular problems with mine, so they are at least different. I was at the Dragon a couple weeks ago getting work done on our Minis there. I saw the guys at Mini Fini and Aesthetic Creations stall my car out trying to move it, never saw the problem with the wife's car....

So maybe there is an adjustment or something that is just a little off.

Press in the traction control button and the traction control off icon is displayed in the tacho. Then press in and hold and the DSC off icon will come up. Press again and you're back to normal.
