Are They Quiet?

Ok, you folks who have taken delivery of the Countryman, are they Quiet? Really, when you are driving on the interstate, what is it like in the cabin? Road/tire noise? Wind noise?

My wife drives a Honda CR-V. It is a great car, but on the interstate and going over just the right kind of pavement, the noise in the cabin is so loud that it makes me turn off the radio because it is just competing with the ambient noise. That's my question and I would like to hear from you owners, as I am very close to pulling the trigger on a Countryman. Thanks.

You need to answer you own question by going and driving one yourself - what's "quiet" to one person is unlistenable to another - it's too subjective.

I've been on the highway in my buddie's All4 and it's as quiet as my Clubman, which I think is pretty quiet.

See, doesn't help at all does it?

Tires can make a big difference in road noise too.

Compared to my '06 MCS, the CM is much quieter. But it is louder than the Rolls Royce my friend's husband just bought .

Had a '04 or '05 Toyota Camry bought new - they advertised double sandwiched insulated floor pans - quietest car we ever had - tranny failed & repaired 3 times and then replaced under warranty - lost love for it. Traded in on 2005 PT Cruiser GT HO - noisiest car we ever had. Fell out of love over the years with all the nickle-and-dime gremlin repairs - sold it in 2010 to get the MINI.

Bought the MINI coupe, quieter than the PT maybe, but not by much. Since a Countryman is not as low to the ground, I would think it has to be the quitest MINI out there, except for the same size engine working harder to move what is also the heaviest MINI.

Nowhere near as quiet as my BMW 5-Series. Definitely can hear some road noise above 70 MPH. (Nothing too annoying though)

Not as noisy as my 08MCS, just a little tire noise sounds like the tires are hollow on some roads. But like what was already said, you really need a test drive.

I traded my 2009 CRV for mine and it is much quieter. Can't imagine how much better it will be after I tear up the runflats and put regular tires on. My other comparison is my wifes clubbie which I used to think was quiet. I don't anymore because mine is quieter.

Thanks everyone, especially GeoffreyM whose comment is right on point with his CR-V experience. I have been trying to coordinate a time at my dealer to drive a Countryman and an "S" back to back to decide which to purchase and listen to. But you folks who have been just using the cars for a month have had the time to just drive them and pay attention to their little quirks, if any.

I drove a CM S All4 with 18" rims and sport tires. Road noise is significantly greater than my CM S All4 with 17" rims and all seasons.

I have an ALL4 and it's too quiet at cruise
Carries speed well ( naturally seems to want to sit at 85+mph
It is much quieter than my audi a3 although this appeared to have major sensitivity to rear tire wear. I am hoping cm is not afflicted in same way. New tires vs old can make a tremendous diff for road noise as off course can general tire design

I have not noticed wind noise so it must be pretty good. Overall it is also I think a ton quietr than the 03 MCS I had also

So For me wind and road noise are good what I don't like is the engine noise at 5000rpm and above - gets a bit thrashy as you don't hear either exhaust or intake but all mechanical bits
