iPod & GPS Installation

I just bought an '06 MCS and want to get the iPOD adaptor - the one that hard wires to the HK radio. The dealer tells me that there's a $500 installation fee in addition to the part price. Does anyone know if this is a DIY task or perhaps can recommend a Los Angeles area shop that's more reasonable?

Also, I'm looking for a good GPS and was wondering if anyone has experience with these? I have a 3 year old Garmin Street Pilot, but its huge! I have seen smaller units that mount to the windshield, but was concerned that with the stiff ride of my MCS, it would bounce around too much.

Any suggestions?

Installation sounds high, my dealer did it and the installation was less than the part, not more. I have the Tom Tom One and love it -- it doesn't bounce too much.

It's a bit involved, but nothing you can't handle yourself.

I have a Garmin Quest and it mounts with the suction cup to the center speedo. Of course, I take the GPS out of the mount when not in use, but have had no problem with the mount staying in place in rough road conditions. I like this location, because it is close and almost road level. Also it is easier to enter info in than leaning up to the windshield.

You dealer is charging more for the iPod adapter installation then I have even heard of. You can do it yourself, as it is a "plug in" kind of job. It's just getting to the correct wiring.

You are aware of the poor level of functionality of the iPod adapter ?

I really would not spend $50 on it, let alone $500+

If you value your sanity get the $40 AUX input, self-installation takes about 10 minutes, sounds great, allows you to control your iPod directly, and also plug in any other device you feel like.
