Took Delivery two days ago....break in Q
We are on day three with our new mini and now can't imagine being without it! (2006 CooperS w/6-sp auto) We went to a Halloween party at our dealer tonight, and got some conflicting information on the proper break-in procedure. One dealer rep told us to keep it under 95 mph and 4500 rpm for the first 1,200 miles. Someone at the party said their rep gave them the keys and told them to have fun when they picked up their Mini. Just want to do it right. If all else fails - read the manual, right?
Thanks..

The recommended break-in procedure is to keep the car under 4500RPM for 1250 miles. I have a MCSa, and although I did follow the break-in period somewhat, I will admit, I did break it occassionally. 16,000 miles later, no problems.
Thank you. I guess what I was really after is if it might be advisable to extend the break in; ramping it up over time as the manual says (Pg. 98...I finally got my turn to read it!
) Nice car, BTW

Pay attention to the manual
For what it's worth I've always found the recommendations in the owner's manual to be the best way to go. At the very least you don't have to worry about having any warranty issues further down the road.

Welcome to NAM - congratulations on your purchase.
I tried to follow the recomendations but every once in a while would look down and find that I was over the 4500RPM mark.
I would recomend following the 4500 / 1250 rule but just know that if you break the rule you won't break the car.

The other piece of break-in advice from the manual is not to floor the gas pedal for the first 1250 miles.
Then again, my S is so speedy that I find myself flirting with the law well before the pedal is floored...so I can't yet imagine breaking that rule!

Good advice and thanks again to all. We forced ourselves to curb our excitement long enough to read ALL the literature that came with the vehicle.
The whole Mini experience has been unlike any car purchase that we've made before. The dealer was just the opposite of every American car dealership that we had dealt with over the last 25 years. No hype, no pressure...just factual information and excellent service before and after the sale. Mini dealers must have to meet a special set of qualifications. I'm ready to sell my Benz and get another one.
