Rumor: No more cloth seats

FYI:
I just talked to my MA and she said that they just got and email from MINI that the space grey cloth interior would no longer be available after Jan '06 build dates. I'm glad I ordered mine when I did.

Wow, me too. I'm not a big leather fan and wanted the look of my MINI to be more quite/sutle than most of the color combo's allow. I even have a matching roof instead of contrasting, and no stripes!

IMO cloth seats are a little bit cheap looking for this car...
I'd like to think of the Mini as more desrving of little classy touches then what you can find in domestic vehicles.

Not to mention that cloth gets stinky rather quickly, esp if you are smoker (which I'm not)

I think the design MINI did with the cloth makes them look very nice. The gray and black theme. Though the rear seat could use a little excitement. Oh, better not go there. I'm on my second MCS and both have cloth. Sad to see it go. The leatherette and leather both look very nice but there are some that still like good ol' cloth seats.

I love my space cloth! I think the leatherette looks nice but the cloth is more comfortable. I find it less slippery too. I'm not into leather and would not get any car that only offered leather seats. I hope they add a new cloth option if they do get rid of the space cloth.

I was really impressed with your cloth interior. I hadn't ever seen it in person. I thought it looked surprisingly great. It didn't look, to me, like the cloth interiors I have seen in non-MINIs. If I had seen it before we ordered, I might have been very tempted. I would be concerned about how it would hold up to possible small stains, etc.. I guess you have had good luck, though, or you wouldn't have ordered it again. (I don't go for leather when I can avoid it-I have the leatherette)

Don't believe everything that your MA tells you

Did you read about the MA who told the MCS owner that the new navigation system will update "directly from the satellite" and didn't need any DVDs?

Thats the worst rumor I've ever heard. I had cloth in my first MINI and have leatherette in my current one. I'm not a fan of the leatherette and absolutely hate the leather. I certainly hope the loss of Space Cloth will mean a new cloth option.

My MA told me that the email mentioned something about MINI losing their supplier for the cloth seats. Perhaps this will only apply to the remaining '06 production vehicles (Jan. and on). It would be really odd for MINI to not find another supplier by the time they begin production on the next gen MINIs.

I LOVE my space cloth seats - way better than the letherette and for the price of the leather i'd rather get some recaro's to hold you real good (coth+harness are a very good solution) One point I like to make is that the cloth is not your average carpet look alike like in a sunfire, it's more of a canvas where you can see the weaving of the material. No fuzzy material, more like a high performance cloth.

Anyone know the weight savings cloth gives you?

the cloth in most american cars is more Velour like, not the softer stuff we have in our cars.

Anyone wanna trade their heated cloth seats to me for my heated leatherette sport seats?

Sorry but I couldn't resist.

Hopefully they will find a suitable replacement for the cloth seats!

Didn't you mean to say that smoking isn't an issue but other frequent noxious and socially offensive gases arising from the seat area could be a problem?

Harness on the street = DEATH! They're illegal since they don't give in the case of an accident. Normal seatbelts are designed to let you submarine [think that's the correct term!], which is literally shifting down into the seat and kinda forward in the seat area so that, in the case of a roll over, your head is not stuck there up high to be decapitated. This is very important since we don't have roll cages in stock cars. Harnesses do not allow this. They are designed aroung the assumption that you will have a roll cage to prevent the roof caving in.

Harnesses on the street are NOT good.

Let me see, since I have leather (no other way to go, love every inch of cured animal flesh in Icarus and don't have to worry about stains) and if I get a harness, even if I do have a cabriolet that has built in roll bars, then I'm guaranteed to die in a roll over. Puhleeze. Not that I have a harness. I wouldn't want to clash with my leather!

There's no way they'll stop making cloth seats of some kind. I imagine they're just going to produce a different color of cloth for all the anti-smokers & bunny huggers out there that need something to hold their "slips only on leather" butts in place.

*note to self - post on PI thread only after done posting on other threads, not the other way around.

I was really hoping they would have been bloth inserts but leather or leatherette on the side. I guess the checkmate package has that but too much blue is a bad thing

BMW/MINI & the environment

The truth is BMW/MINI is an evironmentally conscious company. The oceans are being over fished & many species are facing extinction. BMW/MINI saw using Shark skin for their Space cloth as a real problem. Koudo's to BMW MINI for doing the right thing for Jaws & all his buddies. I'm sure they'll find a suitable replacement. I understand they are close to finding a substitute. They're looking into using baby whale skin as a replacement.

Sorry, couldn't help myself. I haven't taken my anti smart **** meds today.

Chuck
