Backfire / Popping Noise

I hear a lot of people seem to like the noise but my car is in the shop now because i didn't kow it was a "feature" rather than a timing problem.

I am still not sure - I mean Porsche has a nice voomto it but a backfire sounds like an old VW beetle that is misfiring badly.

So why this noise only on the 1st and 2nd gear and when you let go of the gas?

It is a feature, and a nice one. There's many, many, many threads about it, but here's a good write up:

http://www.motoringfile.com/2005/06/28/exhaust_popping

Really is surprising that BMW would take a sportier line w/ the exhaust, and it's one of the things that sold me on the '05

It is a feature of current ECU versions, timing is pulled back to ~-30 deg. on sharp off-throttle. The gear does not matter, it just has to be a sharp off thorttle. It's not a problem at all. If you don't like it...well, too bad

It's not back-firing! THis is what good, efficient exhausts do! It's a "side-effect" of higher performance. Most people who appreciate the performance also appreciate the sound.

Your dealer actually put it in the shop? They didn't know it's supposed to do that?

Will this sound also occur with aftermarket exhausts?

Will this sound also occur with aftermarket ECU/reflash?

Yes, Yes - unless they specifically remove the operation, which they do not as of this time.

OK, OK. It seems like everyone likes it. When I get my car back I will listen to it with a new attetude and hope I will enjoy it as well.

The dealer called me today and said the noise was a feature, i didn't believe him at first and that's why I was checking the web. I left the car there because of a couple of other problems as well:
1. Uneven exhaust pipes
2. noisey dashboard (crackling in high speed and on freeways)
3. noisy sunroof operation (needs lubing)

I only have 1500 miles on my MCS

After 650 miles that I love listening to that sound. My MA made sure to mention more than once that this was a new feature of the 2005 MCS. Hope the other problems come out OK.

LOVE that SOUND!!!

OMG! I too, just LOVE that sound! I won't say that it is what sold me on the car--they had me at 'Hello', so to speak... But once I did that test drive (where it was pointed out to me by my MA as a 'feature') I could hardly wait the month and a half for my own MCS to arrive!

I immediately gave all my friends rides and pointed out the exhaust burble with glee! It's just one of those absolutely cool things, where many times I turn off the radio/I-Pod and just listen to the sounds of the engine, supercharger, and exhaust as I drive.

My only regret is that the JCW exhaust is not all that loud (even less loud than the stock exhaust in my opinion). It performs better, but the burble sound is just a little less prominent than before.

When I first heard the MCS burble during our test drive, it was like a flashback of the best kind. In 1988 we bought an Alfa Romeo Milano Verde. The 3.0L V6 in that car gave the same sort of burble on throttle overun. I hadn't experienced it again until that test drive. The wife and I heard it at the same time and both of us were laughing like idiots. This car has revived that "Italian" emotion in me, and that exhaust sound is a big part of it.

I love the "rap" of the '05 MCS exhaust. We had a 70 mile group drive on Sunday and the guy that followed me asked if I had an aftermarket exhaust on my '05MCS. I told him the '05' "S" is like that from the factory. His reply was "that's cool!".

It's all part of British car ownership.
"noisey dashboard and noisy sunroof operation" The dash gets a nice creek when the temp gets below 30 degrees or so. It ain't a Honda or Toyota...and after one year and 17,000 miles it's been a total blast!!

I wish That's raw fuel hitting hot turbo which is right at the back of the car. You could go to a Kustom Kemps car show and check out flame thrower kits though!

Love it

Beside the rush of speed, that is why I got the MCS over the MC.

Love that noise, plus it is great lead-in to the "beer can" tail pipe story.

Cheers.

When I picked up my car my Dad couldn't understand why I was revving the engine. I was listening and enjoying the exhaust

Though it is easier with a rear engined car with the exhaust being so short, you can get it with the mini. Just take off the cat and run a straight pipe out the back. Tune the computer to run rich and you should get a little flame out the back on shifts if the car is warmed up and running hard for a while. IT is much easier to get it on a turbo car since they tend to always run rich off boost or when the boost drops during a shift...the extra fuel will be dumping out of the cylinders and running through the exhaust....hitting the turbo will ignite it, but a hot exhaust can get it going as well!!
