Sailing on Carmen to New York
Sailing on Carmen to New York
I wanted to start a thread for those who are booked on W&W's Carmen to New York, NY (EA518-CAR). Break out the cocktails, dahling... it looks like we are scheduled for departure tomorrow!
Weather looks good, for the trip out around the Isle of Wight, and into the English Channel, then winds out of the East look like they will be picking up a little.
Tuesday Night
Clear. Low: 42° F / 6° C Wind ENE 15 mph / 25 km/h
Wednesday
Clear. High: 57° F / 14° C Wind East 15 mph / 25 km/h
Wednesday Night
Clear. Low: 42° F / 6° C Wind East 26 mph / 43 km/h
We're scheduled for arrival next Wednesday (5-18-05).
Any volunteers to fill the roles of Julie (our cruise director) or Isaac (our bartender)? Gopher (our purser - whatever the heck that is)?
dcmitchell (your self-appointed Captain/navigator, until we get a W&W Rep!)

CONGRATS! Wow, your trip will be that quick?
My MINI will be finished at Oxford this Friday, May 13th... I hope I get placed on a transport soon after that. ASK MINI told me the sailing trip would be 12 - 14 days.
My VIN doesn't show up on the W&W site so maybe I'll be on a K-Liner?
ugh, the WAIT!
Enjoy the cocktails!

I think the trip will be quick since we're sailing to NYC. Your MINI will almost certainly be shipped on the same route, if you're in Nanuet. Check the W&W site next weekend and hopefully you should have some further news.

For those of you who care (a little too much)...

Booooo...
Boooooo...I just checked again and it says that my car is now booked on the TAKASAGO. Scheduled to depart on this Friday the 13th. No big deal...that's my lucky number
But I wish I was sailing already.
Hey DCM, where did you get that manifest from? I want to see if I can get it for the TAKASAGO.
Thanks!

Track the CARMEN
Ok, now we can get real geeky:
The call sign of the Carmen is S6IW. Go to http://www.oceanweather.com/data/index.html click on the box on the map for the Mid Atlantic, then click on Marine Observations. Look for the S6IW. That's where our MINI's currently are! It's currently just off the coast of Spain as I write this.

And we're following the Banana Boat (literally!)
Awesome. On beyond geeky! Hats off to the idea of searching by Call Sign. I was keeping this trick in my back pocket, but there is another site that I found when I was trying to track my father's progress sailing from Newport to Bermuda a few years back. Go to SAILWX (www.sailwx.info) and click on the "Ship Search" menu. Select "Ship Traffic Worldwide" then wait for the worldwide map to come up. Now comes the geography test. put the pointer off the northwest coast of Spain/Portugal and it will zoom you in. Voila... c'est CARMEN elle-meme!

And she's right behind the Chiquita Nederland! Around 46 deg. 25" N by 18 deg. 00" W. How appropriate.
I'm feverishly working on a way to monitor the ship-to-shore radio traffic online.

I am on the carmen as well and it looks like its going to be on time. I bought my car from princeton bmw and my MA told me it take s a week to get the car from VDC. That i find hard to beleive. The VDC is located in north Jersey, about an hour, hour half from the dealer. Should i expect my car with in a few days from the car being loaded off the ship? The only aftermarket options i got on the car was the aux input, in which only takes a few minutes to install.

Well, 05MCSa got his yesterday, which I think was a little less then a week. According to MINI in NJ it goes through a last quality check, so it's not like they just load it on the truck. We shall see.
As for the aux input, I would tell them not to install it and just buy it as a part ($40) and install it yourself. It's just plugging it in! Unless the dealer does it for free (mine would charge $160 for the install!) And also this way you get to mount it wherever you want it to be as opposed to their default place. There are detailed instructions here (or on mini2.com, can't remember)
