New Owner of a 2010 Mini Cooper S
Hello,
This is the first car community/forum that I have ever joined. I have had a Miata for the past 7 years and looked at their many forums for ideas and advice but never joined.
Anyway, I just purchased my first car today, 12/29/12, a slightly used 2010 Mini Cooper S, 6-Speed Manual and I am absolutely in love! It has 28,000 miles and I got a great deal. I just graduated from IUP and started work on the 18th. My first paycheck and most of my graduation money went into this car and I cannot be more happy. I plan on visiting this site often to look for ideas and help on any projects/problems I may encounter.

Congrats, Tom! Wishing you much fun with the new ride! Yep, this community has been great....my wife got the first MINI for our fam back in 2010 and it's been a blast. If maintained properly, there shouldn't be anything earth shattering regarding hidden "gotchas"....I would, however, be interested in TWO items on your car in particular....
1. On some of the R56 models, hood scoops were melting/warping as a result of high turbo temps under the bonnet. MINI came out with a factory authorized (covered) repair which essentially installs a heat shield under the hood.....you should check to see if its already installed on yours.
2. Not sure how many (could be all from 2010) R56 models fall into this next topic but the water pump also wound up being a MINI authorized (covered) repair. Some folks had their cars OFF (in garages) and reports were starting to come out that the cars spontaneously combusted.....This is one item you'd want to check for sure!
Have fun!

Welcome aboard! When I picked up my Cooper S I thought I was just picking up a fun daily driver. I had no idea how much fun the Mini Community is!
Enjoy!

Everyone,
I went to pick up the car today and I ran into a problem...
My father and I got to the dealership around 7pm and finished all the final paper work. I pulled out of the dealership to follow my father home when the headlights started to flicker pretty bad. I drove it for maybe 2 miles and called my father and told him that this wasn't right and we drove it back to the dealership. We went in and got the salesman to look at the car and decided to leave it there to see if they can fix it.
Have you guys heard about this problem before? It didn't matter if I was driving it or if it was just sitting there at idle. When I drove it for the first time last weekend it was in the middle of the day and obviously I could not tell if the lights were flickering.

Everyone,
I picked up the car today and found out that it needed a new alternator and battery. It is running smoothly and is a blast to drive in sport mode. Here a a couple of pictures...

I did not give up my Miata and do not plan to.
It's a 1990 and hit 222,222 miles a couple of weeks ago. I have had the car since I was 16 and have put all my minimum wage paychecks into it. My father and I used it as a "learner" and repainted it about 5 years ago. The paint job wasn't good (Earl Shibe) and after about 2 years it started to flake off. Last summer I sanded the paint down and primmered it in grey and black on some of the accents (windshield frame, mirrors, wing, and hard top). My father and I plan on either restoring it or tearing the engine down, stripping it, and making it a track car when we have the money.
Basically I needed a more reliable car to get to work. I am an Accounting graduate from IUP and landed a job right after graduation. I am also still living at home (probably for a year or two) and I can afford a car payment.
Here are two pictures for you
