Considering a used 2nd-gen Cooper S, but have a few reservations...

Hi all,

For the past month or so I've been looking around for a good deal on a used 2nd-gen manual Mini Cooper S. Currently I drive an automatic 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer OZ Rally with 140k on it. It still runs just fine, and I have barely had to put any money into it. I'd really like a Mini because they seem like super fun cars, but I have a few reservations:

How many miles could I realistically expect to get out of a Mini before things start to go wrong? I've had my Lancer for 8 years and have never really had any major issues with it after all this time and all these miles. I've seen Minis with mileage ranging from 15k to about 65k and am wondering whether it would be worth it to get something that already has 65k miles on it.

Since I'm 24 years old, I'm kind of worried about how this would affect my insurance rates. Should I think about waiting until next year so my rates will be lower?

At any rate, I'm looking forward to possibly joining your ranks sometime soon. Thanks!

No way to know. Kind of silly question I think. All cars are different, maintained differently, different mileage, accessories etc. Find one you like and buy it. If you can find one with a factory warranty buy it. If you can find one with factory and longer term warranty buy it.

If your not sure Mini is for you I would recommend not buying it!

I realize that, but I was just trying to get a feel for when things might start to go wrong on average. Are all of the Gen2 Minis (2007+) pretty much the same in reliability?

I would definitely like to get one eventually, but might wait it out a little bit until my Lancer finally dies.

It seems like 07-08 are slightly more problematic as far as 2nd gen go compared to the newer models. There are usually teething problems with new models and MINI is no exception. That said plenty are out there running problem free.

Google or search here for: High Pressure Fuel Pump, Timing Chain Tensioner, Cold Start. Those seem to be the most common major problems.

If you can get something under warranty you'll be fine. Just make sure whatever you buy, you have it inspected by a dealership or good Euro mechanic before you write the cheque.

You might be considered foolish if you didn't have reservations! You are considering a used car and no, they are not pretty much the same in reliability. Sooo much depends on how they have been driven and how they have been maintained. Some drivers can all but destroy a car in 4 years.

That said, there are 2007 models out there that could be mistaken for new. Do your research, and have the car that you choose inspected. And don't get in over your head financially - the world is full of people who own things that they cannot afford.

If you succeed in finding the jewel that you seek, you will never forget it as there is nothing like a MINI. I still have memories of cars that I bought more than 50 years ago. (I am not including a '56 Ford.)

Thanks, Danny and Gramps! I'm thinking now that I may narrow my search to something that has a warranty. As you guys have said, you never know how the previous owner treated it and it could very well be trashed mechanically.

If youre heartset on a 2nd gen I would steer clear of the 07 model just because it's the first year and first year cars always have kinks to be worked out. It might not be a bad idea to check out an 06 (assuming you dont have an issue with 1st gens). Ive seen a lot of 1st gens with over 100000 miles on them (mine included 128000). If you can find a really well maintained MINI from the first gen I would run with it but expect to change the passenger side engine mount.

Thank for that information! I'll definitely take that into account.
