Whalen Yin Yang ****

whalen #10 and I also have a #2.

I have seen that site before, but never looked into their products. Can't imagine that they would be all that bad, and for the price, you really can't go wrong...if it does not work, you will have a great paper weight

I used the Hot Rod Girl pool ball shifter you linked to... Paid $15. Simply can't be beat.

NOTE: The rubber bootie thing that you get with the pool ball doesn not fit the very thick shaft used in the MINI... Just get a tube of silicone caulk (about $5 at Lowe's) and fill the hole about 1/3 full of goop. Mash ball onto shaft and allow to dry overnight. Mine went over a year before it loosened up - a quick re-application solved the issue. To me, that's worth the drastically lower price tag over the Whalen, but some will disagree (shrug).

ALso note that I have the leather shift boot pulled down in the pic to show the attachment point - the cover still pulls all the way up to the ball for everyday use. Great heft and size in the palm but BE WARNED: garages, valets and others that are unfamiliar with a 6-speed car will not be able to find "Reverse" without help since the shift-pattern diagram will be missing, so get in the habit of showing people where reverse is when you hand over your keys. This applied to ANY aftermarket **** w/o the shift pattern on it.

Can you explain to me what they come with to put it on.? how big is the hole. I see that yours sits up far on your shifter. Could you not fit it on that lower knotch on the shift stick. thats what i would do. Just cut it down some.
-ALSO....is it an actualy pool ball? size/ weight?
throw me the details man! thanks!

ImagoX's only looks like it is sitting high becuase of the lack of the fitting like on the Whalen. If you undo the boot, and raise it over the notch, it will look less high, or less of the shaft showing.

here is the boot on the Whalen...and yes, much more expensive, not for everyone, but it comes down to personal preference. Both are great options depending on your budget.

It comes with a rubber peice that's meant to friction-mount the ball to a round shifter rod shaft, but that rubber boot is fitted for classic cars wit a more slender shaft. The ball really isn't any higher on the shaft than the stock one - it's an illusion caused by me having the leather shift boot pulled down. I have it pulled up over that "collar" beneath the shift ball for everyday use - I just pulled it down while I was installing the ball.

If you use silicone goop to attach it, the goop will fill the "notch" and keep the ball from moving. If you need to remove it ever, a spirited twist (about as hard as you need to use to remove the OEM ****) will tear free the silicone, allowing you to re-install the stoock ****.

And yes, it's a real pool ball.

Whalen mounting hardware IS awfully, awfully nice, don't get me wrong. It's just too rich for my blood for a simple ****, sorry...

I designed this new shift lever and asked Doug Whalen to fabricate a prototype for me...it's was a bit too tall for me and on it's way back to be shortened 15mm...

I did try it out and shifting is no longer a vague excersise for me...
Greatly improved shifting speed and precision!!!

Doug mentioned that he may be adding this design to his product line up in various materials including Delrin...mine will remain brushed aluminum as my choice...

MSFITOY, what is the advantage of the cylindrical design as opposed to the standard sphere?

For me personally, it feels much more precise with my fingers wrapped around it like a bat...during quick shifts from 1-2, my fingers sometimes slip off the ball causing a miss-shift...so I tend to pause between the gate...not anymore...sides, if the design's good enough for C6 LeMan racers, it's good enough for me...

Yeah, where can I get a plaid shift boot? Hmmm, dark green with either black or white accents...

This was made for me by a (now late) friend for my Nissan. It's now on it's way to Whalen to be modified to use his connecter.
Still may get the Black Delrin, though!
