I don't have my bently manual here so I can't check but is there a tic mark or timing mark on the cam gear?
There usually is and if you turn the engine over so the number 1 cylinder is at TDC then the timing mark on the cam gear would be pointing straight up or at the top of the cam gear.
Didn't see the pictures. It looks like the white dot might be the mark.

Bentely manual says..

the chain can't hop teeth on the lower gear.

So it ended up being a cracked head. Glad to see you're getting it repaired and hopefully you'll be back on the road soon so you can finally enjoy your MINI.
