235/40/17 on 17x8 +42 ???

I'm looking at getting new rims and tires. I won't see much autox or track action for a couple years, so it's primarilly a street car. I found an awesome deal on some 235/40/17, and am looking at getting Motegi Racing TrakLite 2's in 17x8 +42.

My question is, with my M7 springs, what mods will I likely ABSOLUTELY need to do to get these to fit? Just a little rubbing on the plastic isnt much of a concern as long as it wears itself away, or i can do some lite dremeling.

If I can make them fit, I'll definetly do a writeup with pics!

Thanks!

im almost positve you could make them fit. dremeling etc. is probly going to be needed. maybe some sligth fender pounding. some things that u will need to make them fit easier would probly be control arms for the rear and camber plates up front, might not be necessary but could make it easier. maybe some other with more experience could chime in.

Locally, I've seen one guy running these setup at the track on a stock height car... another tried them on a lowered MCS and they did not fit, but he didn't try really hard. I'd think they would fit with some major trimming...

.. will probably need spacers to clear the rear trailing arm and the front struts. Also a good amount of trimming to the wheel well liners in front and back. Trimming of the inner lips of the plastic flairs. I would also bet that some bangin out of the rear fenders will be needed. With this some more work will need to be done with the plastic flairs to get then to fit right now that the fenders are pushed out.
You may also need to grind away some of the tiny studs that hold the well liner.

all in all it's not really that hard and can be done without anyone even noticing you have done so, if you take your time.

Just like what Onasled said, a little work will do. I'm running 245/35/18 with custom racing wheels (THANKS TO ONASLED)
and it is MEAN 2"dropped with PSS9 and camber plate and control arm.
If there's a will then there's a way Those are my favorite words

Thanks alot guys! I'm fine with running some small spacers. I was thinking I'd have to do that on the rear anyway. I was just trying to do anything I can to be able to go ahead and mount them right the first time. However, this does not appear to be the case.

So here's my plan.

I'm gonna go for it. A little trimming here and there, fine...
I guess I'll never know just how they'll fit till i get them mounted.

At that point. If I need spacers, say 3mm and 5mm front and rear, can you guys point me into the right direction for finding these? I know madness makes 5,10, and 15, but who makes 3? what about 8's? And where do i find longer bolts?

Anywho, I'm just trying to be prepared for the task at hand.

Thanks!

Surely someone knows where to find longer stud bolts and 3 and 5mm wheel spacers?

Think about the much better ones that Turner Motorsports carries. They are race proven and will NOT break, as the Pilos as been reported doing. More expensive, but far better. I have a few sets of these and love them. The self aligning nut guide is fantastic.

Onasled-

Thanks for that!

Question... Which length stud would you think i would need if using up to a 6mm spacer? 75mm or 90mm?

Totaly doable. No spacers needed! Lots of trimming of the inner fender lips though.
Have a look at these pictures of the same setup your asking about on my race car. Cheers,Bob http://www.motoringunderground.com/f...?t=1394&page=6

Bob, what spring rates are you using? I would imagine that it's something much higher then street use.
Good that you were able to go without spacers. Not sure what your wheels are as far as size goes either. I'm thinking you must be on 7.5" rims, maybe about 40mm offset? Just a guess.

Car look fantastic. Hope to see it in person some day. You guys did a great job, and did it so quickly also.

Your fine with 75mm as long as you stay under 5mm spacer. But this also depends on the wheels and how thick they are at the hub. My race wheels are pretty thick there so I needed new the 90.
Here is a pic of my car from last year with 235-45-17 on 17-7.5-45 rims

Onasled, Bad guess. I said the same size setup jymontoya was asking about! Spring rates are "top secret", but I've set these up with no springs at all while checking bumpsteer too.
Thanks, Bob

Thanks man! Super excited now! A little plastic lip sure as hell isn't going to stop me! It never has! MUAHHAAHAHA

What wheels are those? They look like the original TrakLites. Did you have them custom made? Because I thought the original Traklite only came in a 17x7.5 size?

Also, since your running race tires, don't they usually run pretty wide? With a street tire, I'd think they'd be a touch narrower. Any thoughts?

Thanks again!

Hello jymontoya,

I don't run these big tires on my street Mini. ( have a look at my "Mini gallery" white wheels are the street setup)
I only run this oversize tire on the race car because they require us to run that size "spec tire" in the U.S. Touring Car Championship.

I have no information for you on race vs. street tires in this size, sorry.

Nothing is custom, all my wheels are regular part #'s & sizes!
Check the linkage.
Good luck!

Cheers, Bob
