Replace one tire or two?

We had a nail in a tire that is too close to a previous repair to fix (FR), the tire has about 5000 miles, 3000 of those were on the back of the car (thats where it started out). The tire on its other side (FL) has approx. 8/32" tread left on it. Should it be replaced as well? Just looking for opinions, I know that the different diameters aren't ideal, and the consequences of running different diameter tires, just wondering how bad it will be. Discount tire said its ok as long as there isn't 4/32" tread difference between them. Flow mini told me it would be ok to replace just one as well. I'm just curious how haywire this will make the TPMS, since they are based on wheel speed sensors, as well as the ABS etc.

Anything from 11/32nds to 8/32nds should be all good for replacing only 1. the ABS counter is sensitive, but not that sensitive. The 8/32nds is my rule of thumb based on Audi North America. Quattro is a very sensive system, and by universally using their rule has worked for me.

cool, thanks a bunch, I know it won't drastically effect the handling or anything, just wanted an answer from someone who understood what I'm talking about when I said "The TPMS goes off the wheel speed sensor", the flow mini service guy and the discount tire guy were like "huh?".

Personally, I'm stunned that they didn't recommend
replacing all 4 tires (and the mini spare if you have an MC).
