Zinc Plate Flaking Off Rotor Edge

Anyone had the zinc plating flake off their rotors anywhere other than the pad contact surface? This is my first time around with zinc plated rotors, so I don't know if this is unusual or not. I just noticed this today with 1066 miles currently on these rotors.

It's a Zimmerman OEM size rotor that has been cross drilled, gas slotted & zinc plated by DRT (Design Rotor Technology). I bought them from DRT (through ebay).

hard to tell in that pic, but it appears to be an impact. I could be wrong, could just be a lousy plating job.

I'd agree with the chip theory. Even a rock. But plating rotors is something that varies by the rotor. They need to be very clean prior to the plating to remove any oils. The other issue is that cast iron is pourous. (sp?) This leads to a varying thickness and adhesion to the iron. I've seen some that are mirror followed by some that are more hazey post plating. In any case even in time the nicest finish will burn off with the brake heat or begin to rust in time.

Sorry to bring this thread from the dead, but how do you like these rotors besides the issue of yours chipping? I was thinking of picking up a set.

Despite that chip, I like them fine. I don't auto-X, but I do drive the MINI pretty hard. This is my first time with cross-drilled/slotted rotors. I like them. After the pads were bedded in, I found increased stopping power quite noticable, as well as better wet weather braking. I'm 99% sure that chip wasn't there in the first place, but I suppose the exposure it gets, it's bound to get beat up by the elements. While I certainly can't speak from any sort of racing experience, I will say I thought the price was great and I am pleased with them. Over 2112mi. on them to date.

This is all you will get with drilled rotors used on the street.

As much as i like the look of drilled rotors, i will never buy them.

I sure hope you allow the brakes to cool down before you apply the parking brake.
