SSRs
SSRs
what is the story behind SSRs? Are they being discontinued? or they limited the production for couple of styles? As expensive as they are, would not be a wise investment to get a set if they are being cut off from the market. Any inside track on this? Alex?
No intention of hijacking the thread, but I'm looking for one or more SSR GT1 in 17x7 - if you've got one or more for sale, please PM me.
I heard that SSR went out of business because there were too many other companies knocking off their styles and selling cheap (in price, not necessarily quality) imitations. I've also heard that SSR was bought by another company, and that company will be putting out products similar to the SSR line in the future. :impatient ::shrug:: No idea what's true or not, but golly I love their gorgeous wheels.

The following "official notice from Tanabe Ltd" has been repeated on numerous automotive forums, but I could not find an original source:
Here is the Tanabe website (very much out of date): http://www.rd-tanabe.com/english/index.html
"As you know, Speed Star Co. Ltd and Speed Star Sales Co. ltd went bankrupt on January 27th this year. The disappearance of their high end technology and the traditional brand maintained for more than thirty years will not be acceptable to the people concerned in the after market as very shocking and unforgettable news of 2005.
We were looking for measures of their reconstruction in some way since January 27th because we had been engaged in the sales of their products in South East Asian countries and had a favorable relationship with them long term.
We, Tanabe Co.,Ltd, have been selected as the exclusive buyer of business rights and assets of the two companies (Speed Star Racing & Speed Star Wheel) as the result of the tender invited by the receiver.
We will need more or less one month to complete the transfer of the assets from the receiver and to restart the production and sales. We will keep you informed each time the details come to be clear.
We will continue to produce SSR products as well as our Tanabe products"

I don't know about the full selection of SSR's.... if they did, i would not have to buy a spare in the first place.

Last I heard, Tanabe wasn't even in production yet, and when they do start back, they're not going to produce all the wheels. If you ask nicely, someone at tirerack might tell you which models you should consdider buying a spare for.
As I understand it, the Comps are going to continue production. I've got my fingers crossed on that one though, as I didn't buy a spare 17" and Tirerack is apparently out of both colors in 17" now (they were already out of anthracite when I made my purchase).
SSR and SSW were purchased by Tanabe.
SSR being world market SSW being JDM. Tanabe has decided to combine both markets into one core - GT7 and GT2 are being discontinued. GT3, GT10, and Comp will be carry overs.
I expect more agressive fitments in comp, however they will likley not have a machiened lip - looking more like SSr C type . There are several
new designs comming aswell.
Production was resumed in january on some SSR products, for late 1st quater arrival date... hopefully.
All future will be SSR lable under Tanabe ownership.
Hope this helps

might sound stupid but let me ask the question one more time: SSR rims will be around, they are not discontinued? A simple yes or no question
