Stupid Balancing Question

OK, I'm really not sure on this one.

If one were to inflate a tire to, oh, say 70 lbs. and do a balance, would the balance change if the pressure was then releaved to normal 34 lbs.?

Never really thought about it, but I don't think pressure should affect the balance at all. Except maybe when almost flat.

OK, just throwing it out, since one of the sets I received from wheelmax was like that, and I'm having a very slight front vibration. I'm going to reseat it and check all the rings tomorrow before heading over to the tire shop for a rebalance and runout check.

Also, if you got hubcentric rings with it that are plastic, that could be part of your problem. Most other dealers (tirerack and discounttire) send them with metal rings instead. You may want to get yourself a set of metal rings in the mean time. I think you can buy them separately from tirerack and discounttiredirect.com

Well, I may have solved the vibration issue, although I'm very surpised. I had the tires set to 34 cold, and had the condition mentioned. I looked at the door jam (duh) and noticed it was sped to 38! The tires were hot, and were already at 38, so I set them to 40, just to test and I'll top them off in the morning cold. Well, the vibration just from the TWO psi increase is 90% gone! Hopefully after another couple pounds it will be 100% gone and I won't have to have anything done! I am shocked that the tires are THAT picky though!

naw, something's wrong with your balance or your tire is not completely circular (defect). You should reconsider getting it re-balanced on a hunter
balancer and set it at 34-35psi cold if its only you or someone else
in the car.

You shouldn't have to pump it to 38psi cold just to get rid of vibration.

Well, 38 is the recommended pressure anyway. I will do some more testing tomorrow.

38 if you have more than one passenger in the car, right? (3-4 people
in the car).

it's too high for just one or two people on street especially above 65F
unless you're auto-xing and need that particular setup. You're going
to start hopping too much and tires may not grip at its max.

I agree with kenchan that you have another problem that your not being attentive too. changing tire pressure has no effect on shimmy. You have a poorly balanced tire, or a tire or wheel that is defective.

The sticker on the door says 38 front and rear. I agree there may still be an issue that I WILL get checked out - but it is a DAY and NIGHT difference now just withthe 2psi boost. The wheel was shaking, the mirrors were blurred, etc. Now it's butter smooth in the front, and the rear has a slight shake - but the wheel is now smooth as glass, like the stocks were last week.

Then it sounds like you might have a defective tire. it's not circular.

Get it re-balanced on a hunter machine if you feel the need. The
computer readout will be able to tell the technician if there's a tire
defect or not. I think the store may have put the tires on a rack
on its tread and possibly created a flat spot.

Check in the manual. I know the door jam says 38psi, but the manual says 32psi. 38psi is for full load.

I drove a few hundred miles at 38psi and I wanted to shoot myself.

I did. The manual says 'check the door jam'.

38 (I'm actually just below that now) feels just like the runflats, perfect to me.

OK I see what you're saying now. The manual is actually contradicting itself.

The door jam doesn't say it's the max load. One page of the manual says the jam will have the correct pressure for the stock tires, while another page shows a generic chart, with varied pressures by load.

Either way, I like the stiffer ride in general.

Get them Roadforce Balanced on a Hunter 9700. That is the only way to know what is going on for sure.

here is the locator:

Well I got it back from the shop, and they are butter smooth now The tech that did it had already left, so I don't know how far they were off, but I'll be faxing the $45 bill to wheelmax for reimbursement in the morning NOW I'm happy I switched wheels

LOL

I had to put some time on the GTP anyway...the gas needed freshening, tires needed to be run...I think I've used it 5 times since I got the mini!

Im sure you know this already, but make sure you re-torque your lugs
after driving 15-20miles on your new wheels.
