TPMS Issue

Vehicle: 2004 Mini Cooper

Problem: TPMS light will not turn off.

Troubleshooting so far:
1) Attempted to reset the TPMS with the reset button below the hand brake, but nothing ever happens.

2) Scanned the vehicle with a SOLUS Pro to find one several old ABS Codes. Cleared the codes, then 5E5C Initialize Runflat Indicator code came back.

I suspect maybe one of the ABS speed sensors has gone or is bad - but usually the scanner would give a indication of which one. In this case, no additional codes or other indications of other problems.

Hoping someone has encountered this issue before that can help narrow down the problem so I don't have to spend $50-70 per sensor to replace one by one hoping this resolves the issue.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, I haven't experienced this but I'm sure I read something about it... If I remember the TPMS is tied to the DSC/DTC speed sensor which is tied to the ABS.

But I would wait for someone else to chime in with a little more knowledge about the system.

Motor on!

Yep check the ABS sensor. You will get the ABS light also and the traction light ( if you have that option ).

Okay - I guess I will start by replacing the front right and work my way around the car until fixed if there really is no other options.

Note - I don't have any additional lights outside of the TPMS light. ABS and all other dashboard lights do not light up.

If its just the TPMS light and not abs , then it might be the reset switch in the center console that might be bad. Or something spilled on it. Or you keep bumping it , then triggering the light.

Its in the center console and you can get it with the 7/2004+ console with taking off the e-brake boot and reaching down with a finger and pushing it out.

People spill soda and coffee on them and they sometimes go crazy.

Post 7/2004 design. Right hand side hole in #7 cover,#7 covers the other side. Or in the pic the aux ( rally light button is there ) .

Pre 7/2004 console design . Button at the bottom hole

Thanks ECS - Definitely only get a steady TPMS light. No other warning lights or codes outside of the before mentioned "5E5C Initialize Runflat Indicator"

I'll take a closer look at the switch in the next couple days and see if that gets me anywhere.

So I pulled up the center consul and popped out the switch. Inspected the switch and wiring, no nicks, pinches, or cuts in the wire. All three wires are nicely set within the plastic connector. The switch looks in good operating condition. I did a continuity test on the switch and it tested well just to be sure.

After re-installing the switch, I went through the reset process once again
- Turn key to On Position
- Press and hold reset button (I held it for about 30 seconds this time)
- drove the car around for a couple miles

No change in the light status.

To help describe what the light does -- when I turn the car to the On Position, it lights up (as it should) for a few seconds then turns off. Within a second or two, the light turns back on and stays on steady.

Possibly the next step I will do is trace the wire back to where it connects on the other side and check that connection.

Yea, trace that wire for issue, like a break in the line or a split, what you describe sound like a rare thing to have happen never heard it turning off then on again. With out being the switch or the ABS sensor itself.

Kind of changing the subject but it is related; is there any way to disable the TPMS system completely? I own a '14 JCW Paceman and would like to completely disable the TPMS; I could gladly live without it.

Dont think it can be coded out since its a control item, maybe some people have done it with NCS expert ?

We are talking about the Gen 1 MINIs here which use the ABS sensor , Gen 2 2008+ use the inboard sensor per wheel. Then have a receiver.
