Considering 8+ inch wide wheels on an R50

I want to go with a more aggressive fit, however I don't want any rubbing. This car is my daily driver and where I live the roads can be pretty bumpy. I am also planning on putting coilovers on it this spring.

Sizes I'm considering:

17x9 et25 with 215/40s
17x8.5 et25 with 215/40s
17x8 et25 with 205/40s

What would be the best fit considering I want to lower the car, not slam it. I would love to hear from people with aggressive fits that live in a Northern area like I do.

Thanks in advance!

Be prepared to have an extra rim and tire handy....40 series tire in the north...one good pothole... Boom!!
Good luck. Good choice imo for a weekender...but for a daily...so wide...tramlining... Hydroplaning...and may make the car feel SLUGGISH.....
I AM BIASED...I love light rims and nimble handling....just cars feel truckish when you go too wide....they loose the mini feel....

Check this link.

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...calculator.php

I'm running 235/40ZR17's on 17x7.5 Rota's with a 45mm offset. No rub what so ever. This combo will clear even if lowered.

BTW Rota Torques are available in a 17x8 with a 35mm offset.

Couple of more. Had several people tell me they like the more aggressive stance. Coilover's or drop springs are next.

You have an R50, wheel weight is something to minimize unless you drive along at speed limit all the time.

Heavy wheels and tires require more power to get moving and to stop, they feel sluggish when steering.

If you are only after an aggressive look then it doesn't really matter but you want your tires to fit and the cost not be too high. Typically wider wheels cost a little more than the same wheel in a narrower size.

40 series sidewalls are stiff, using them on bad roads is risky. A softer sidewall tire would help reduce the jarring and protect your rims a little. If you hit a deep/wide pothole at speed you will likely damage something.

For a:
17x9" et25 rim, the wheel will stick out 48.4mm (1.9 inches) more than stock
17x8" et25 rim will stick out 35.7mm (1.4 inches) more.

Did you want the tires to be stretched on the wide rims?

205/40-17 fits rims 7-8" wide, perfect for 7.5", tire diam. 23.6" (smaller than OEM)
215/40-17 fits rims 7-8.5" wide, perfect for 7.5", tire diam. 23.9" (smaller than OEM)
These are for 7" rims unless you want to stretch fit a tire onto a wide rim.
Or
245/40-17 fits rims 8-9.5" wide, perfect for 8.5", tire diam. 24.4" (same as OEM)
245/40-17 fits rims 8-9.5" wide, perfect for 8.5", tire diam. 24.7" (taller than OEM)
245/35-17 fits rims 8-9.5" wide, perfect for 8.5", tire diam. 23.8" (smaller than OEM)
These fit wider 8" rims or wider better than a 205-215mm wide tire.

Smaller than OEM tire diameter can help give you more clearance especially with a wider than OEM tire. You can also use more negative camber to get some clearance.

If you have coilovers that are fully ride height adjustable you can lower your MINI to whatever height will allow for clearance, a definite plus. Smaller tire diameter gives you lower ride height and more clearance for the tire but more risk for scraping speed bumps and hitting parking stops.

Remember that wide tires are also heavy depending on which tire you choose.

Thanks for the info I'm not concerned about the performance of a heavy rim. I spend most of my time driving the highway at 80mph so it really doesn't matter. And I'm not concerned too much about potholes, yah I'm in Canada and yah we definitely get potholes in some areas but for most part they're really never that bad that you could damage something. And yes I'm going for a stretched look.

I'm leaning toward 205/40 on an 8 inch rim but I haven't made up my mind quite yet I may go with the 215

215s on a 8" wheel wont give you much of a stretch. Tire choice is also something to look for in a stretched look. Some stretch better than others.

I ran 205/40 P-Zero Nero on a 8".

That looks good I'm just a little worried about throwing things off with a 40 series 205 did you find it made a difference in in fuel mileage? I hear that Falken stretch well

Not much of a difference in fuel mileage.

Falken stretch, but they ride pretty bad imo.

Do you have more pics of you car somewhere? I'd love to see the 205s at few different angles. Thanks
