Driving a 2006 MC with a stick 5-speed. Purchased new and now at 74,650 miles. Trying to avoid replacing sensor wires, yet don't want to replace pads and rotors early either.

What mileage were you at when you did the brakes prior to a warning indicator??

Front indicator was worn down at 30k, rear had just touched at this mileage.

Is there a reason you don't want to replace the sensor? (I'm not saying there's anything wrong, this is the same thinking my wife has). I'm measuring thickness every oil change (I need to remeasure the sensor thickness, but I think it's either 10 or 15mm).

 

I had an 02 so no sensor but I got a little over 90k on mine before needing a new set. All four were definitely ready to be replaced, the rears more than the fronts.

 

You can not use miles for wear items. Why not? Because one guy may go 20 miles in bumper to bumper traffic each day and brake at the last second at every opportunity. They other guy may travel 60 miles a day in Wyoming coasting to every stop.

It takes 5 minutes, even with the factory jack and lug wrench to look at them. Just take a look if you want to save the $14 on a sensor.

 

Well if you change the brakes before the sensor sets off then you don't need sensors. Once they go off you need a new one. 76k though I say you might get anywhere from 5 miles to 15k out before replacing them.

 

I would not worry about the sensors, they are a wearable item and either use them or remove them and zip-tie them out of the way. You would have to continue to check the pads and rotors like the average car owner.

 

You can get a brake gauge to measure how much pad you have left, so you have an idea when to replace them.

We got a first brake job on the MC at 16k for the fronts and 31k for the rears.

 

I would suggest doing them at the same time but, it depends in the overall how much of a difference in the pads are. Also if you plan on doing the same type as what is on their it would make sense to do them as they wear out. But if you upgrade I would suggest at the same time.

 

I bought mine at 67k. I've since put on 13k miles (and ten autocross events) on it. The PO seemed to have replaced the front pads, but didn't replace the rotors, and they're getting pretty thin.

So are the rears too, come to think of it. Pads are good, but the rotors are heading south for the winter. The joys of deferred maintenance ...

 

Update to my thread...,, Now at 84,500 miles and have about 3mm front and 4mm back left on the pads. The front rotors are noticably worn, though suprisingly the feel in the brake pedal doesn't feel much different than when the car was new.
