I want to mount 215/40/17's on 17" wheels with an offset of +35. Is anyone else running this combo? If so,..have you experienced any rubbing problems? And if so,....what have you done to alleviate this? Thanks..

I am running 215/45/17 on ASA AR1 wheels with 40 offset. I was advised by everyone to not go below a 40 offset unless I was willing to have so rubbing. My 40 offset looks great and I have no rub even with the bigger tire. The tires are the new Goodyear Eagle F1 G3 DS, they are great and have a good price at tirerack. I would be afraid to go with a 35 offset even with the smaller tire. I would check with Alex at the tirerack for advice.

Good luck

35 offset will rub, maybe not on a smooth surface, but hit a bump....

I'm running Toyo Proxes T1S 215/40-17 on the SSR Comps (offset +42) and the only rubbing I get is when the coilovers are cranked way down and I have people/stuff in the back.

I'd suggest you go with a wheel with less offset to be safe.

Wow......Thanks for all the replys! I just returned from the bodyshop and tried the set up. The Yoko's 215/40/17 on the Kosei 17" racing wheels with a +35 offset do NOT rub!!! However, I am going to have the MINI lowered as there is too much space and it just does not look good. I'm also having the factory aero skirts added and all the black trim painted Dark Silver to match.

Thanks in advance.

From older posts I remember the following:.....

215/40-17 w/ a minimum of a +40 offset will have NO rubbing ..lowered or not

215/45-17 w/ a minimum of a +40 offset WILL RUB..if lowered

215/45-17 w/ a minimum of a +40 offset WILL NOT RUB..if not lowered

I personally have 217/45-17 on 17 x 7 rims w/ a +40 offset, my car is NOT lowered.... and I have NO rubbing.

Peace,
D

I am. Goodyear F1 on Rota Tarmac wheels.
There's a picture on my MINI page.
These wheels have offset of 48, which is the same as the optional BBS R90 wheels.

215/40/17's do not meet MINI's specs for load rating, but they certainly fit and I have heard of nobody with problems running them despite the decreased load rating.

Because of this, I chose to go with 215/45/17's

I am not sure what the offset of my wheels are. I have the stock 17" wheels that come with the MCS sport package.

Any ideas?

I have aftermarket rims with offset of 42mm and H-sport springs on my MCS.
With Yokohama AVS ES100 in 215/45-17 tires I have slight rubbing in the rears only with loaded with four people-this is partly due to the square sidewall of the ES100 tires- if you want to go with this tire and have offset of 42 then try the 215/40-17 or 205/45-17 tires size.
If you did not lower your MINI then you will be fine with 215/45-17 tires of any manufacturer.

This is from a post in the tires section....
With the sport package, you get the R85, also known as the S-Lite. It's not light, though, weighing in around 25lbs. It's a 17" x 7", with an offset of 50.

Peace,

I know of at least one MCS owner who was running 215/45/17's (Yoko ES100's) on his non-lowered car, and had rubbing issues. Other have not, seems to be luck of the draw in some cases.

I personally would have preferred NOT to go to a 215/40/17, but the tire I wanted was only available in that size. But, on the advice of a well respected owner who was running 40's, I had no problem going that route.

This is qualified by- you should be using these tires on rims that have no more than 37mm offset and stock suspension.

Something is not right. If you have stock rims and stock suspension I think it is safe to run 215/45-17 tires without worrying about rubbing. The problem is if you have stock suspension and aftermarket rims of less offset than 37mm. So safe range is 37mm to about 48mm offset. If you lower your MINI then you need even less offset like 42mm to 48mm. It all depends on your suspension set up. Still having doubts? Talk to Alex@tirerack.com

This owner was running after market rims, he felt that the 45 profile was causing the rubbing. Again, he seemed to be an isolated case since others have done 215/45/17 without issue. Not sure what the offset was on the wheels.

I can only speak from my experience as an owner with a lowered MC running 215/40/17 on aftermarket wheels. I have had the car loaded to the hilt with an another adult (to the point where the rear black trim was almost touching the wheels), drove from DC to NJ, never rubbed once. I was a bit apprehensive, especially since the passenger was my mother-in-law and a tire issue would have been embarrassing, to say the least.

Thanks everybody. I am looking to re-mount some summer tires on my stock 17" rims in a month or two. Looks like 215-45's will do the job.

I also was thinking of running 215/40-17’s, but after PMing with Alex from the Tire Rack, he suggested I use 215/45-17’s. I’m thinking he may know something I don’t, being in the tire biz, which I’m not. It’s never a bad thing to listen to people who know something.

The reason 215/45 is recommended over 215/40 is that the 45 has a higher load capacity. This is important when carrying people in the back and encountering road hazards like potholes. You tend to have a greater selection with 215/45 too.

215/40-17 also causes the speedo to be off by a few percent too because of the smaller diameter, but I speed too much anyways so maybe it's a good thing.

Any rubbing problems are because of incorrect wheel offset, not because these tires are too wide. I'd stick with an offset between 40 and 50.

Is getting wider tires better for traction? How wide can you go on 17's?
