Pre-brake Squeal
Pre-brake Squeal
Hello All:
With only 3,300 miles on my 2010 Justa Cooper, I have recently noticed a squealing sound when lightly applying the brakes. It is very similar to the warning heard when brake pads need changing. I can readily reproduce the sound by pressing the brake pedal enough to disengage the cruise but not far enough to actually begin braking. Once the brakes 'grab' and begin slowing the car the squealing stops.
It sounds to me as if this squeal is coming from the right front wheel although that could be an acoustical illusion.
'Darwin' is totally stock with no mods, aftermarket pads, etc.
At any rate, this has been going on for two weeks and is now getting louder. I will readily admit that I am easily annoyed by squeaks, rattles, bumps, clunks, etc. so perhaps it is more of an issue for me than it would be to someone else, and it is starting to drive me mad.
I will likely schedule a service appointment this week and hope that someone here can explain it or tell me how to resolve it myself.
Love my MINI and my dealership... just wish they weren't an hour's drive away.
Thanks for any input.
Best,
Doug

Mine did that for a bit on my S, but with like 30K miles...then stopped
I think i just had something caught in there. You could just pop em all off and take a look, but thats if you can take the time to do it.... theyre some of the simplest brakes to take off

Thanks for the response Adam.
Don't have the tools or the experience. Washing it, fueling it, and checking the oil and tire pressure is about the extent of my mechanical abilities.
I guess I will just call the dealer and schedule a service appointment. Hopefully it's something as simple as a rock or something rubbing. I just don't think a car with less than 4K miles should be making this noise...
Thanks again,
Doug

HKRYMINI, it's that time of year when road crews are chipping roads. I had a similar experience about a year ago. When it happened to me, I was able to turn the wheels and just 'drive it out' using a series of forward and backward swerves. It saved me a trip to the dealer (which would have ruined my day that day).
