I bought a set of aftermarket wheels that are currently mounted on my MCS and they look great (IMHO). They are lug-centric wheels, however, (the bore of the wheels are larger than the diameter of the hub) meaning the weight of the car is supported by the lugs. This isn't a problem.. yet. I'd like to buy a set of hub rings that would convert these to hub-centric wheels but am striking out everywhere.. BTW, my understanding is that the Mini has a 56.1 mm wheel hub (according to a note from Randy I saw somewhere). My new wheels have a 73.1 mm bore... anyone got any ideas short of going to a machine shop and having them made to order????

I assume you contacted the place you bought the wheels from about the rings.

Couple of options:

1) Contact the wheel manufacturer about where to get hubcentric rings.

2) Find other companies that sell that wheel and see if they sell just the rings. (If Tire Rack sells the same wheels, I know Alex could help.)

3) Check on Ebay. There is a company on there selling hub centric rings for different wheel types.

Also, in case it helps, the Honda Civic (at least the new Si and I believe all Civics) have the same hub bore as the MINI. So, somebody may claim they don't have them for the MINI, but DO have them for the Civic. It should work.

Check reputable wheel shops locally or wheel suppliers. I got mine from a company call Wheel Tec and they cost $8 for all four. And yes, they were aware of the need for ring for the MINI.

here's what I've run across in a brief search: results

I'm also going to get ahold of local wheel/tire shops and see what they can offer too.

thanks everyone! best value/specs appears to be from a Canadian outfit Ryan recommended: 1010tire.com. $18.99 plus shipping for a set that are 73mm outside and 56.15 mm inside, should be nice and snug. Gonna have them overnight them and will report back on quality/fit. Thanks again to everyone, you guys are the best.

Good to hear that you found what you needed. I have an extra set of four 73mm/56mm Hubcentric rings. If anyone needs them I have them for sale- I ordered extra by error so they are just sitting around. Cost me about $25 to have them custom made for my Centerline RPM rims for use with my MINI. Brand new. Never used. Made of very hard plastic.

You need these rings inserted into the opening of each wheel to allow the wheel to sit on the center of the hub and take the load off of the lug nuts/bolts that are there to secure the wheel not bear all the weight. It would be unsafe to run the car without the proper hubcentric rings. Be careful.

Minihune: since the hubs on the Mini are 56.1 mm, wouldn't your 56 mm rings be such a tight fit that the plastic could break just installing them? Second, I think "unsafe" is probably a bit of an exaggeration. In doing my research on this topic, I discovered that the broadening of the aftermarket wheel industry has made "lug centric" wheel mounting a very common practice. I am told that with proper torquing at installation and at intervals thereafter, there should be no problem. Indeed, my new wheels look and run fine: no vibration whatsoever (the biggest problem with a lug centric setup). Why then do I want the hub rings you ask?? Not because of safety concerns but because I do not want to have to re-torque my lug nuts every few thousand miles to prevent any possibility of vibration. Just my two cents...

minihune is just looking out for us

Redleg; I'm looking forward to hearing your feedback from the 1010tires.com purchase.
***I wonder if Tire Rack sells hub-centric rings? Alex has been mysteriously absent from this thread :???:

Cheers!

What do you measure the new inside of the rim?? or the hub on the car itself??? to find out what size hub ring you need.

the people who sell you the wheels know what the size (diameter) of the bore (the center opening of the wheel) of your new wheels is. In my case it's 73.1 mm. The diameter of the hub on Mini's is 56.1 mm. For a good fit, I need wheel hubs that are ever so slightly bigger than 56.1 mm on the inside measurement and ever so slightly smaller than 73.1 mm on the outside. This makes for a snug fit. I've ordered hub rings that are 56.15 mm inside diameter and 73 mm outside diameter -- should be a nice fit (I hope).

The rings that I had made are an exact fit (based on caliper measurements done by an aftermarket wheel shop)and I left out the 0.1mm (my error) so no problems. Therefore they are 73.1/56.1mm. This topic came up before and the concensus was that the hubcentric rings are an absolute must. Not being one to argue with safety and since I already had the rings, I went with them and all is fine.

Minihune,

Whoa wait a second. Are these the same Centerline rims that Randy sells? If so I'm kinda surprised. There is no mention that they are lug-centric on his website.

Thanks

Chuck

the Centerline RPMs have a centerbore of 73.1, so you need to use centering rings for the MINI. You should get the rings with the wheels!

Yes, I got the Centerline RPMs through Randy but the order got messed up and I had to order some hubrings to use them. Normally the hubrings should come with the wheels. And the wheels are hubcentric.

Anyway the final result is that I have an extra set for sale.

Storytime: So I stopped by my local Discount Tire and asked if they had Hub-centric rings for sale. He asked "what size?" I said "73mm and 56mm" He came back with a bag of 4 that read "73mm/56.15mm" This works for me, and is consistent with the standard sizes I've seen online. He rings me up and the total? $5.30! I asked again just to make sure I wasn't dreaming

Happy Dance!
Cheers,
Ryan

show off! don't you live in or near detroit (READ: Motor city)? All we have in the DC is hot air. Anyway the ones I'm getting are alloy -- not plastic and, hopefully a one-time expense. Good luck.

i actually prefer the plastic ones over the alloy ones.

the alloy ones can seize to the wheels, and they can also deform. the're often damaged when removing the wheels because many times the rings will seize to the hub and then you have to pry them off. none of that happens with the plastic ones obviously.

my hub rings arrived yesterday, but I've got a concern: the "lip" on the rings isn't much wider than about a half inch. And the weight of the car is going to be resting on this surface?! Sure seems that they should be wider??? Are the ones you guys have different??
