Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec

anybody try these yet?

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....e1=yes&place=0

Wondering how they would last with street use?

Yes they've been tried.

Search for star spec for many threads on this.

No extreme performance summer tire is going to last that long for typical daily street use.

Expect to change these tires once per year or about 12,000-15,000 miles, depends on how you drive.

I have a set on my new S. Only 1500 miles. Very impressed so far. It is hot in Delaware, and I am new to the R56 suspension, but my initial impression is that the tires are an excellent choice for a performance tire with low tread wear (200). Very sticky.

I put them on my car and use them mainly in auto-x (STS). Very sticky but my only complaint with them (for road use compared to my normal tires [General UPH]) is they ride very harsh and decrease fuel economy.

I've had these on my car for about a month now (just about 800 miles all on Denver area streets) and I love them. They are sticky (even in the heat - high 90s low 100s) and they provide a great ride. I went from 16" runflats to 17" Direzzas and the ride had become a lot less harsh. I have the standard suspension not the optional sport, so maybe that may help a bit!

How are they wearing and how many miles would you guess that are going to last. I am thinking about getting some for a daily driver with a few track days. Could these last 20k miles on the street?

I have them on my S. They are a great tire for AutoX and at a great price. I'm only hoping to get 10,000 miles out of them, these tires are really soft expecting 20,000 out of them wont happen.

With only 800 miles they still look like brand new. But I would tend to agree with what was said above, you will probably only get about 12-16K miles out of them depending on you driving.

For me they are specifically for summer. So in the winter I will be driving the MINI with the stocker all season runflats.

Love mine. Had the kuhmo ecsta mxs before and the star spec is a much more predictable refined tire, the kuhmos also took a lot of heating to get max grip, the star specs on the other hand have incredible cold grip and even better hot. I suggest buying them.

Great traction and good tread depth for a auto-x street class tire. Handles heat much better than Falken RT-615s and doesn't squirm as much in wet weather.

I have a set that I bought just for track days. They perform really well on the track.

Alex at Tire Rack says that 20-25k miles is totally obtainable on a street driven car with a FEW autox and track days if rotated every 3000 miles.

I have them on my MCS for the last three months about 2000 miles. I run it on a street application with 10 track days a year. This is a relatively new tire so there are not a lot of information about long term treadwear. I really hope it can last 15,000 miles.

Sorry I could not be more specific.

If that's the case, sign me up... I haven't had a set of tires with a treadwear rating in the 140-200 range last more than 12K miles on the street (with some AX and DE work).

Local MINIs autocrossing them are expecting to get a full season out of them (9 events, 72+ runs in all) with daily driving, though.

Many of the BMW guys around here are running on free sets of Z1's for "testing" (pretty cool program, actually - drive in for a free set of wheels/tires to use as you please, as long as you're willing to come in for a tire inspection each quarter; at the end of the tire's life, they just slap your OE's on and off you go (or, get another set of free wheels/tires if they're testing something else). Anyway, they love them on the street and on the track - most have responded that the wear is excellent for what they are, but none of them expected them to last more than 12-15K miles (max) and less if you AX or track them...

I have had mine on for 7500 miles now. They are at least halfway gone, so 12-15k is the MAX I expect to get out of them. I also rotate quite religiously and really keep an eye on tire wear.

I have to say though, I have not driven a better street tire, EVER. I have even tried RE01R's and I like these more! Stickiness/wear/predictability/wet traction are all excellent. Though next friday will be my first track day on them, so I'll see how greasy they get after some hard driving

Here is the email from Alex describing the traction differences between the Star Specs, S-Drives, and D3's and his estimation of mileage for the Star Specs.

How many track days do you think the Dunlop tires will last? I usually run the NE circuit, i.e. Glen, LRP etc... Just curious so I can do some planning. I have the tires but do not have enough miles to really know yet.

I regularly measure my tread depth with a little digital meter for rotation purposes. I will measure my tread depth the day before my track day and the day after. If I have time I'll even do it just before my first session and after my last session. I measure the inside of the tire and outside to check camber etc. so after next friday I can bring us something slightly definitive.

But then it also really depends on driver. I'm quite hard on tires and brakes, and am often near the limit. However I also have an LSD and camber plates, which will both help save tires...but I'll post my results anyway

JMHO, with daily driving I would say 4-6 DE's before they are toast. Nice thing is that they start and end a session the same (which is not quite as good as an r-comp, but lots better than other street tires!).

I've been watching this tire(and comments on it)since it came out.I wanna pull the trigger on this tire, badly! However,I am worried about the quick wear.I don't wanna hear the wife say,"new tires again?!"
Will the S Drives perform as good and wear longer?I want to use mine as a pure street tire.

The S drive should last longer, 300 tread rating compared to 200 for the Dunlaps.

"Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec is a DOT-approved summer performance tire for hard-core driving enthusiasts and car-club members. The tire helps deliver superb dry traction and handling at regional car-club events like track days, driving schools, and autocross."

They are really not a real street tires. They were made for the track and auto-x. 10,000 miles fun miles. If you can aford to replace them once a year or sooner, go for it, if not the S-drives should last 15k-20k miles and are fine.

Bear in mind the S drive is a UHP tire, and comparing it to extreme performance tires isn't a fair grip comparison.

UTQG wear ratings are only designed to comapir within a brand.

I don't rotate tires on my MINI, as I want the better ones on the back.

I've been through one set of star spec on the front of my S, at 6K miles they had one of the four original wear-indicator holes still visible. They might have had another 2K in them.

The rears are down to 2 wear holes after about 10K, so 20K miles might be possible on the rear tires (if you drive these fast tires slowly.)

IMHO, rotating tires every 3K miles would be like having an old British sports-car...

I think we all look for a street tire that will handle like a track tire and still get as long of wear life as possible, for as a good a price as possible.Alex,
which summer performance tire stands at the top of your list??(I mean lookin' tread aint bad either! )
