Performance Tires & Treadwear - 5,000miles on Yokos?!
don't hit me! Please don't!
I'm running a set of Yoko AVS ES100's on my car and have put 5,000 miles on the set, rotating as needed. One track day, light sessions without a lot of speed and a cool day. (total time: less than an hour on the track).
And I'm getting down there in tread.
I realize that these aren't all-season tires guaranteed for 50,000 miles or anything, but doesn't 5,000 seem a bit low on the scale of things? I'm not a bat-outta-heck driver, generally.
If I'm wrong, then so be it. I can't live without the grip and performance of performance tires!
That said, does anyone have any recommendations for what to try for my next set of tires? I'm trying to keep the price per tire around $120ish or less, but the S-03's are tempting. Maybe also the Eagle F1's - running those on the Audi and they're GREAT. Since I can't yet afford a set of track-devoted wheels and tires, I need something with great dry grip and also good in the wet on less than perfect surfaces.
Thanks!

Hi Rachel
I would say that 5k on ES100 is pretty unique, they are expected to to get 15-25k.
Are all 4 tires worn out?
How about even wear across the face of the tire's tread?
Is your car modified?
Can you get pics of all 4 treads, and email me with them?
if you can help me with a few parts of this equasion, I may be able to explain what happened.

HI I just had to jump in here!
I had BIG-10-TIRES put a set of ES100's on a few days ago, I remember the tech saying they were a tight fit, but it was not until a few days later I noticed they had ruined 3 of my rims, quite badly in some places!
So RED03, make sure whoever fits them signs somthing to say there is no rim damage before they fit your tyres, I am going to have to do a touch up job myself I guess as I didn't notice until the day after.

Damn Rachel,
You are one hard riding woman! Only 5k and they're worn out? I'll bet you had a blast (actually several) though. I too run Goodyear Eagles on my Audi and on my MG. I can recommend a set for good all around performance and 20K+ wear.

This Big 10 shoudl be made aware, if not resposible for any damage they caused. IMHO

All four are showing significant wear, but the ones in the front currently are getting to the point that I won't be rotating them back to the front again. I'm rotating again this weekend to even it out. I might be able to eek out another 1000 -1500 miles by swapping them to the back, but the backs are getting there, too. Not bald yet, but WAY more wear than I've been used to seeing. If anything, the wear is accelerating now... I'm planning another track event in August. Unclear what the conditions will be, but I'm starting to wonder if I shouldn't swap the tires out before the event.
The wear is even across the tread - I'd heard that the tires can tend to chunk if not warmed up correctly or run too long under aggressive driving conditions (like the track), but there's not really anything major to report.
The only mod to the car is the set of rota tarmac wheels that the tires are on. I'm running with a couple fewer psi in the fronts than the rears (I was experimenting so much for a while for the right balance that I'd have to run down and check what I finally decided on).
Like I said, I'll be pulling the wheels off this weekend anyway, so if you'd like to see pics of them I can snap a few then... just let me know what preference you have for file type and size and I'll get those to you.
Thanks Alex!

I have a set of 205/50/16 AVS ES100's that I have put approx 11,000 miles on. This includes 2 auto-x and 3+ hours of intense track time over 2 days at Willow Springs here in Califonia.
I still have about 1/2 the tread life left. They have been rotated once, after the first track day. I keep my pressures relatively high, 33-34 for everyday, 38-40 for auto-x and 36 to start for the track.
You mentioned that you run a fewer PSI in the front tires... What constitutes fewer?Alex may disagree with me but I would think this may have contributed to the excessive wear you've experienced.
What size tires are you running?

thank you very much. i will stand in front of the place, where they mount the tires on the rims...i will be carefully looking..cuz everything is brand new
then i am coming home and putting the wheels on the car myself
also anyone know what is the weight of the yoko es 100 in 215/45/17 size?
i want to make sure my scale is being accurate

2-3 psi difference.. not more than that. The tires are the stock size.

It seems like there are a lot of other variables that could affect the wear besides just mileage, for instance:
driving style (and experience), track temperature, track configuration, inflation, cool down period, track surface, etc..
It seems like driving style and experience might be an interesting one to discuss. I know that I tend to be hard on tires.

I have 12000 miles on my ES100s. (18000 total on my car 3000 with runflats, and 4000 with winters) I've done one track weekend with 4 hours of track time running pretty hard. The tires look like they could last at least another 10000 miles. I did notice that the fronts wear quicker than the rears. They are worn 30% more than the rears but absolutely even across the surface. It probably has to do with the tough track time and having forgotten to rotate them for quite a while. I'm very happy with the tires. I rotated them at the start of summer when I switched from my snows and they are beginning to even out.
On a side note, I was able to compare them to a friend's MINI wearing Bridgestone SO-3s on the track. For the first 25 mins of a session the tires felt really comparable (slight edge to the SO-3s), but towards the end of the session was where you could really feel the difference. The ES100s once really hot get a little mushy compared with the SO-3s. Coming into the pits I expected them to have chunked all over the place, but they weren't as bad as I thought. After driving a couple 1000 miles they evened out. I've got two track days in September so I'll see how they hold up again and post a full report.
