What's your definition of best? The best in snow & ice? Will you want studded tires? Do you require a run-flat winter tire? Do you want a winter tire that's still good at pavement driving? (a "performance" winter tire)

The best snow & ice tires are not the best tires on the pavement. The best winter tires that still behave like an all-season on dry pavement are not the best in snow & ice. The best tire depends on your demands out of the tire.

Best winter tire for snow and ice traction. In the summer I run a 18' wheel/ performance tire. My opinion on the run flats - if they didn't come on the car, I never would buy them.

I have the new Blizzak WS-60 on my 318ti and I have been very pleased. We are finally having a real Minnesota winter so I'm getting money's worth for sure. I had the older Blizzak WS-50 for a few years, and these WS-60's are without a doubt better tires on the pavement. Traction on snow and ice is at least on par with the WS-50, and from tests I've seen, they are better. The Nokian Hakkapeliitta RSi is supposed to be another great studdless tire, but I'd stick with the WS-60. They are significantly cheaper and easier to find. I got mine at the Tire Rack. The RSi is now many years old, so I wouldn't be suprised if the WS-60 has caught up to, if not surpassed it in performance.

Nokian

The Nokian Hakkapellita RSi is an outstanding tire for snow and ice traction. Also handles well in the dry. I think it says something that this is one of the very favorite winter tires in Canada, where they know a bit about driving in snow and ice.

I'm partial to Nokian Hakkas... WR, RSi if you're still interested in dry pavement performance. The numbered Hakkas (2, 4, 5) if you care more about snow / ice performance. I had Hakka 1's without studs on a previous car, Hakka 2's without studs on my 2003 Cooper, and now Hakka 4's with studs on my MCS.

Alex - is there any sign of larger snow tires coming from the manufacturers in the future?

Oh, say in 205/40R18?
