Run Flats...hit me in the pocket...!

Hello from NYC! My beloved MC2006; had TWO runflats go on her the other day. The cost of replacement is $300 per tire at the MINI service center. Should I have sought another tire to replace the runflats...? Thanks

I probably would have gotten four new regular tires and put a flat tire patch in the boot.

I drive an '06 and replaced my runflats with BF Goodrich g-Force Sport tires. The improvement in ride smoothness and noice reduction are considerable. I wish I'd made the transition earlier, but it made $$ sense to wait until the runflats were worn.

Folks will argue you loose the "get me home safe" benefit moving from RFs to conventional tires, but to me the improved driving experience outways the risk of not having a spare. Heck, my other car didn't come with a spare and has conventional tires. The manufacturer simply added an electric compressor and a can of OEM fix-a-flat. I added the same set up in the Mini.

for 600 bux you can buy a fresh set of regular tires and a spare doughnut for a honda civic (same bolt pattern/offset) to throw in the trunk.

Buy used runflats here to replace the damaged ones. Once they are used up, go with regular tires... that's what I am doing.

I personally like Michilen PilotSport PS2s (summer tire) but have heard really good things about GoodYears F1 GS-D3s

For winter I'd go for someone's take-off 16" rims and mount a dedicated tire (assuming you have storage space in NYC)
I have a set of Hakkas waiting for Turkeyday

I also need to get the can-o-slime, compressor, and plug kit to stuff into the 'hidden' rear compartment...

Never buy replacement tires from a dealer. Order replacement run flats from Tire Rack and have them shipped to a recommended tire shop for mounting and balancing.

Buy almost new runflats from the board here at $100 per tire and have them ready when your other 2 go out.

Whoa, why is that. First, check tirerack.com prices. Far cheaper than from a dealer. I would never buy tires from a dealer? Do you buy steak from a fish store?

Second, do you want to get out and put goop or change a flat tire in NYC? Would it be better to just be able to keep on driving to a tire shop?

I would think carefully about all the ramifications of changing to non RFs.

Sounds like the dealer ripped you. Put those on the front to wear faster, then read the other tire threads for more info.
Since I have a track wheel tire set, when I go out of town I put one of those in back.
