Lug stud/nut conversion for R56

I know that there were many sources for Lug Stud/Nut conversions for the First generation MINI.

What about the R56??? Specifically the MCS?

Thanks in Advance!

Go here:

http://www.txwerks.com/servlet/Categ...el+Accessories

Texas Speedwerks has studs, nuts and conversion kits for the R56 MC/MCS. Jeff and Scott are stand-up guys and they have great products. I dare say any NAMer who's talked with them and/or bought parts will highly recommend them.

I have the TSW 14mm -> 12mm stud conversion kit and have been very happy with it. One thing to note, however, is that the black oxide coating on the studs "flash rusted" about a week after I put them on. Another owner in the same area (coastal Virginia) had the same issue.

The strength isn't affected, and there hasn't been any further rusting beyond the initial "blooming" that happened almost immediately, but it's a good idea to keep a little oil or anti-sieze on the exposed threads.

The instructions that come with the conversion studs recommend the use of anti-seize from the tip to within 1/2" of the hub.

That's good - they've updated the instructions, then. I got one of the first sets, and they initially didn't even come with directions.

I have a set of TSW adapters on my r-56 also. Worked great, and with a pair of H&r 5mm spacers on the front, let me put the old Panasports on the new car. TSW is a good vendor!

Just wondering...
Did you guys have to use hubcentric rings?

changing the lugs will not change the hub bore size.... the need for hubcentric rings (or a lug conversion for that matter) will depend on the wheel. I hope this clears things up.

It does, thanks.
I just wish the box or the wheel would indicate what the hub bore size is.
IDK.. the wheel was designed for a R53.. did R56s change the hub bore size since then?

No, the hub bore on both models is 56.1mm

Well, it's been about a week since I did the stud conversion and mounted the wheels.
Loctite blue, 24hrs to cure and anti-seize (all that good stuff) and torqued to 86 ft/lbs.
Drove about 110 miles on the car since then.
Checked the torque on the lugs this morning... it's the same.
Then, I went to go autocross in the MCS.
I come back home and check the lugs again, just in case.
The rears are fine, but all 4 lugs on both the front wheels were not torqued to spec anymore. So again... back to 86 ft/lbs.
I guess all that hard turning may have taken it's toll, but even so... I've never had my M3's lugs slightly loosen after numerous autox events.

Any one else got this situation with their studs?

Nah, mine have never budged, even with a bunch of autocross sessions. Are the lug nuts coming loose off of the studs, or are the studs coming loose from the hubs? Also, did you use anything on the 12mm portion of the threads? (loctite, anti-seize, oil, grease, etcetera)

It's the lug nuts coming loose off the studs.
I used loctite blue for installing the studs on the hub and anti-seize for the threading on the studs (where the lug nuts go over) like the instructions stated.

Hmmm..I don't know then. I got mine before they changed the directions to include putting anti-seize on the threads, but other than that, we installed them the same way.

Maybe they're like cylinder head studs and need to be retightened once after installation?

The metal needs to stretch some. After a few tightenings the torque should remain constant.

Cool, thanks for the heads up.
I'll just check the torque once in a while then.

Anyone know of a 90mm stud kit that will fit the R56? as in 90mm in length.

^^Bump for that question. I may wind up having to use a 15mm spacer and the TSW conversion is only good up to 10mm.

Did you convert to M12, or stay with M14, because M14 takes 103 ft-lbs. of torque.

Personally, I like the bolts over studs. I use wheel hangers.

M3This & MoxieMini,

I also thought I needed longer studs with 15mm spacers because TSW stated that the stud length was designed for 10mm spacers. However, I measured the stud protrusion past the nut, on a friend's car, without spacers and found that the studs protruded 15mm past the lug nut. So I order the 14mm-12mm stud kit (studs and nuts) from TSW. I installed the kit with H&R 15mm spacers and the stud length is perfect. The nuts thread all the way onto the stud with the stud right at the top surface of the nut (no prutrusion past the nut). This was exactly what I wanted because I did not want the look of the stud sticking out past the nut.

Note: My 2006 GP uses the 14mm lug bolts just like the R56.

I torque my 14-12mm studs to 84 ft-lbs.

140Nm or 103ftlbs +- 10 is what MINI recommends regardless of wheel type.

I have a set of VOlk TE 37 17"x7.5...The instruction said Torque them 65-85 ft-lbs. I torque mine at 65 ft-lbs. I was afraid to overtightened it and stripped the thread. I hope 65 ft-lbs is good enough to hold the wheels.

Drive around for a little bit get out and re-tighten them and see if it was to loose.
