Hey Will,

Do the powdercoaters give you a color palette to choose from or what?

Thanks,
Rob

Cool!! I thought it was a Miata, but the Mazdaspeed version is even more fun. I bet it's a blast. Please tell me you've lowered it. The new MX-5s sit WAAAAY high.... kinda like the R56 MINIs. I'd love to see one of the Miatas dropped over a set of tires and wheels that would really fill those flared wheel arches.

I absolutely love this little car. And mine is a 2005 (weird, I went back a year in cars but had too since the MSMs were only made in 2004 and 2005) so it's the NB body style, not the brand new NC chassis. I drove a 2007 MX-5 but it was almost too refined, too comfortable and a huge factor was the lack of power mods that are out right now. The engine bay is so tight on that one and I'm not sure how close anyone is to developing a solid SC or turbo kit for it. So I bought mine with a factory turbo that I can get about 240 rwhp out of before I have to upgrade the turbo.

I should be over 200 rwhp in about 2 months once my parts arrive and everything gets installed. And it's RWD, which I loooove. Not that I didn't absolutely adore both of my MINIs but there is something about the RWD and the much lower seating position and sportier design that really does it for me.

Mine will be lowered very soon but the wheel gap is nowhere near as bad as on the 06 and 07's.

We paint wheels at our bodyshop and usually charge 125-150 per wheel to paint.

Painting wheels are a PIA, it's hard to paint down inside the spokes without getting runs up top.

Having said that, I usually tell people to get wheels powdercoated.

The shop that does are powdercoating charges me 100 bucks (depending on color) a wheel (cheaper than what I charge) and has over 7000 colors.

All this plus though people don't think about it, wheels get chipped too. Powdercoating practically eliminates that problem.

When I painted my motorcycle, I ground down the metal on the tank and had the tank powdercoated in clear, than I added candy.

Point is, they've even got clear powdercoating.

We recently had them clear powdercoat a set of polished aluminum rims we did on a '69 camaro.

The looks of polished, the ease of clearcoating to keep them clean.

Mark
