Rear End Groans and Creeks

Last Friday I had a local shop put on a H sport comp sway bar since, then the back on the car creeks and groans everytime I go over a bump. When they were putting it on they took off the exaust and most of the heat shielding under the back end it looked like it was all put back correct but this noise is awful. It is almost like plastic rubbing together. And the mechnic, a BMW shop did not read the instructions so he took off stuff that he did not need too. Also the "backfire" sound is different, sounds like it is coming from under the car now.

Anybody have any ideas.

check lube on the bushings. top bottom inside, outside.

if that doesn't cure it, its most likely chassis seal rubbing on the bar.
you need to remove the bar, take a box knife and trim the seal for
clearance.

otherwise, you just have diarrhea..

^Yeah, I'd say they didn't lube it correctly. Find a greese gun and pump some greese into the zerk (sp) fittings. That's one of the best things about the HSport bar, easy to lube up!

I have been chasing this same thing down for two months.

I have checked everything and still I can not find the problem.

Let me know what you find out and good luck.

undo your endlinks and move the bar end up and down. if you can
hear the groans your bar is rubbing the chassis seals. mine's a 22mm
and rubbed until i trimmed it. those H-sport bars are 4mm bigger in dia.

end link? grease?

I installed my own H Comp rear sway bar and ended up with an odd clunk sound. I went under and tried to tighten up all of the bolts and found that the only bolt that could be tightened at all was the right side end link and that only tightened about a quarter turn. After I was done the clunk sound was gone.

Other than double checking the end links, I vote for the grease.

My Alta 19mm rr sway installer claimed that the poly bushings "just do that" unless you lube them frequently when I brought it back to complain (which was only about two weeks after the install). That was months ago now, and I have learned to "live with it."

But, even though I generally trust him, I wonder every time I hear it, was he BS'ing me? It doesn't constantly creak, but sort of chirps a few times -- especially over speed bumps, up and down driveways, etc.

If so, what type of lubricant works best? Jeez, I hope you don't have to uninstall the bar every time it has to be lubed,m and you have to lube it every two weeks. If so, then is there a different bshing material that is quieter (and performs reasonably well?)

Hmmm.

So, kenchan, do you think
1) the install was poorly done, or that
2) he did the install correctly except for lubing the bushings, or do you think that
3) the sound might not even be related to the sway bar bushings?

Also, kenchan, what brand is your sway bar? I read elsewhere that HK bushings are designed so that lubes last longer and they are easier to grease(?) Can you confirm or deny that?

Thanks. If this installer has misled me, I am gonna be a really unhappy camper.

>1) the install was poorly done, or that

KEN: Yes, there should be no noise unless your bar is deformed or a mechanical problem with your car.

>2) he did the install correctly except for lubing the bushings, or do you think that

KEN: well, lubing the bushings and making sure the bar is clear from
any chassis seals is part of the installer's responsibility... if he can
prove otherwise (other part of the car making the noise), then, that's
his job too to cover his ***.

>3) the sound might not even be related to the sway bar bushings?

KEN: Possible.. why don't you unlink your endlinks and see if you
can hear the same noise when you move the bar-end up/down with
your hand?

>Also, kenchan, what brand is your sway bar? I read elsewhere that HK bushings are designed so that lubes last longer and they are easier to grease(?) Can you confirm or deny that?

KEN: I don't like to promote the manufactuer of my swaybar (i personally
do not like the way they do business) so will not say here. i will PM it
to you. i will confirm to you that if you use the right amount of lube
and maintain it you should not have any noises from the bushings. also
keep in mind that the noise could be coming from other rubbage of the
swaybar with your chassis.

>Thanks. If this installer has misled me, I am gonna be a really unhappy camper

KEN: I think the installer needs to help you until you are satisified.

goodluck.

poly bushings do make noise if they're not greased correctly, where as rubber bushings will never make noise, that part is true. you don't need to lube them frequently however, and definately not every two weeks. my alta 19mm has never made a peep. I installed it myself.

The lithium grease alta supplies is very good. your installer may not have done it properly or may not have used it at all. you can find more of it at summit racing

Different backfire probably due to gasket leak. Maybe he didn't put a new or any gasket on. Some will seal itself as the system heats up and expands.
