Another thought on Adjustable Swaybar 3 positions

Hi all.

I know there is almost too much info on the Adj Swaybar in this forum already but I have been told something I haven't came across before.

I was told by a circuit racer that the 3 pos adjustable swaybars could indeed be adjusted into 5-6 positions by selecting different holes on each ends (eg. inner hole on one side and middle hole on the other side) providing that you have the adjustable end links. This would give you more refinement. Have any one heard of this?

Thanks

Yes, You can do anything from unfastening the rear and front bars to attaching only one side to attaching only the rear bar to what you describe above. Do it on a "test and tune" day and have some fun with how your suspension changes.

Changing these settings allows for more or for less understeer, sometimes in a severe way. If you can control your MINI then all is fine and you can have some fun. If you find it's too much exaggeration then you'd be doing what most of us do which is to strive for neutral handling by minimizing understeer.

If your course is only left hand turns then it might be possible to set the rear bar into different holes to allow for one side to be stiffer and the other softer and get some benefit.

I do adjust tire pressure on one side of my MINI for the track conditions and surface to compensate. I mark chalk on my tires and check tire temperatures and increase or decrease psi with each session or run. It's just more fine tuning especially if all the left turns are fast or abrupt.

The adj. end links would be important because if the bar is not in the same hole on each end the links would need to be adjusted lenght wise for every position change or you would be puting a preload on the bar but yes, your (the) statement is correct. The bigger the bar and the faster you go the more important this would become.

While I have not experimented with this (no adjustable end links at this time), Peter of M7 told me some time ago that this is an acceptable practice...

From what I was told no matter which holes you select from each sides you would get equal stiffness on both sides .

Thanks for your reply:smile:

Yes, it would be fine.

Typically though, the net change from swaybar adjustment holes is so small that this would only be useful for extreme fine-tuning. 1PSI change to your rear tires would probaby yield a greater effect.
