Powersteering cooling mod?

I had an interesting thought, what if a power-steering intercooler was put inline with the intake side of the pump?
something like this
http://www.etrailer.com/Power-Steeri...FYXNKgod32F2AA
i wonder if that would be enough to negate the powersteering pump fan

i'm also a little surprised a manual rack hasn't been developed for our mini's yet considering the high failure rate of the fans and pumps.

I like where your head is at and that is a VERY inexpensive solution!

I have used similar in Arizona on other tracked and DD cars.

Keep us posted!

It's been my impression from what I've read on this forum, that the most common failure is actually the electric motor, not the hydraulic pump itself. It's commonly referred to as a PS pump failure, because as a complete assembly, that is the part that is replaced. Some people are opening the motors, and cleaning out the brush dust as a preventative maintenance.

at 119K on the pump i'd be more afraid of taking it apart then letting it fail. I do keep a fire extinguisher on hand in case i suffer the infamous PS pump fires.

Thanks for reminding me - I need to pick up a small fire extinguisher.

I've got 134k on mine. When I get around to dropping the subframe for the LCA bushings, I may just crack mine open. I'm assuming I can get the motor apart, and deal with that separate from the hydraulic pump. But that won't be until I get into my new house (that hasn't been bought yet). I'm not doing anything else in my current garage / driveway unless it's absolutely necessary. Well small jobs like parts of a certain JCW sound kit excepted.......

oh yeah lol, i didn't recognize you off M|u. it's a really quick install, one hose clamp 2 long screws (to the air box) and replacing the little firewall shim with the one in the box.

Thanks for the run down. I assumed it would be that easy - glad the battery doesn't have to come out. Not that I can't already do that with my eyes closed....

So I have your JCW intake coming on Thursday, and I now have a tracking number for my JCW exhaust. It will be here on Friday. It's supposed to rain, but I'm thinking of enlisting in the help of my friend, and borrow his garage. I could do it in mine if I cleaned up, but it's real tight, and I have a dark ashpalt floor. So jacking is a challenge (no comments from the peanut gallery) and it's dark as heck since there is no light reflection. Drop one nut (again, no comments) and you could loose 10 minutes looking for it.
