XYZ Coilovers, concerns?

Hey,
So im going to be buying a set of XYZ coilovers from a friend, they have less then 700 miles on them and go for 800+ new. Luckily I'm getting them for quite a nice price.
Anyways, Im more concerned about lowering the car and was wondering if there are any major effects this could have on my car. such as things breaking and so on.
If there is any information anyone can give me that would be much appreciated!!

Thanks!

When you lower a mini you do risk breaking front axles (CV joints mainly), due to funky angles of the joints, depending on how low you go. Also, in the rear you can get crazy amounts of negative camber... again depends on how low you go...
Certainly there will be more stress on the car when you lower it. But I haven't heard of much more than broken CV's and crazy rear camber that can be associated with lowering. Rear control arms to control rear camber and CV axles are fairly inexpensive (~$200 for control arms, ~$100 for each axle). A lot of people have lowered minis... it's just one of those things that you have to figure out if you outweigh the benefits over the risks...

1) You arent going to be breakin axles left and right. It is a very rare occurance actually for axles to break, period. Also, for QUALITY axles, they cost much more then $100/side. OEM you are looking at near $550 (depending on the deal you can find) and then you can find some at driveshaftshop.com which are slight step down.

2) Never once heard of XYZ before a month or so ago....so take that for what its worth. IMO Stay away.

3) Rear control arms are needed if you plan to go way down.

I think luseboy was talking about the control arms, not the axles..

yeah, i already purchased the coils and they are actually sitting in the back of my car now lol. I did a lot of research on the XYZ and found they are extremely popular in Europe, and they are used on a lot of the European Racing Circuts. I ended up getting them for 450 so I'm really not going to complain about that lol.
I went to put them in a few days ago, got the front left tire off and whatnot, went to take the bolt that holds the strut to the knuckle and the head broke right off the bolt, so need less to say I wasnt a happy camper. im kind of nervous about the other 3 bolts doing the same thing so I'm probably going to have some friends help me with it just in case.

Hi there,

I know that this a thread lift from way back, but just curious how you (or anyone lese for that matter) that are running XYZ coilovers feel that the quality is of these? Are they good? What kind of camber can you get in the front with these? So in general, are you happy with your XYZ's?
Best Regards,
Alex

As others have said, it does put undue stress on the constant velocity joints; that's just how it goes. Don't go stupid low if you care about preserving them, and also not bottoming out on everything.

Un-adjusted, the rears will have excessive camber, causing uneven tire wear. If you got a great deal, then consider buying adjustable camber links for the rear so you can dial the camber back a bit.

Regarding constant velocity joints: OEM units are pricey, like the other guy said ($500+). I had both axles go last year, and bought A1 Cardone Remans from RockAuto. These are not Chinese units, and are built in America by reworking OEM parts. Mine have held up well over the past year, with no signs of impending failure. I'm lowered about 1.5" on Bilstein PSS9's.
