I have a 2003 MCS. On occasion the oil warning light comes on after ~1hr of town driving. I shut it down and come back 5 minutes later, it's off and stays off. Any suggestions?

 

Have it checked out. Could be a faulty relay, or it could be something more worrysome. Had that happen on an old Saturn of mine (well, my kid's actually) and it was the oil pump dying.

 

check your oil level first before you do anything else. if it's ok then you prob. need a oil pressure sending unit. is next to the oil filter housing. really easy to switch.

i have replaced a handfull of those.

 

I had this happen with my '03 MC. Turned out the bypass valve in the oil filter assembly was sticking, and causing the light to come on. They told me that they had seen it before, and that it won't cause damage to the engine. The valve is a small, spring-loaded affair. They were repairing it under warranty, but I ended up trading in that day for an '06 MCSCa.

 

Go with Joey's comment.. check your oil level first (asap). If it is really low, such as not showing on your dipstick, add oil right now, and don't drive to get oil.

If your oil level is good. Does the light only come on when you are idling? Mine would only come on when the oil was warmed up, and only while idling. As soon as I touched the throttle the light would go back out.

 

Oil level is good, Light comes on only when I throttle and disappears when I take my foot off the gas. THis only happens after driving for ~ 1hr in town back roads etc...

55k miles; Oil changed 2k with Mobil 1 5W-30

 

Thanks for the information; I think I will try a mechanical pressure gauge to see what is going on...

 

Same thing happend to me , at first the light was coming on and off so i just took the car in yesterday. They changed the oil filter housing and the problem was not fixed. Tomorrow they will be changing the oil pump and i really hope that's what is triggering the light to go on . I miss my car !!!!!
