Ok I don't know if you guys talk about this already but I was over at http://www.bridger.us/mini and I just found out that their seem to be an area of paint on the inside surface of the hood that is coming off due to it being in contact with the plastic seal that is on the top of the radiator. My description here is probably not clear enough but if you go over to that site you will see picture of this .......I also found the same thing happening on the inside surface of my mini's hood ...........just trying to get the word out (so hopefully something can be done about it SOON).....seem like this is happening to both cooper and cooper s

I've got 'em, too. 21,000 miles. I noticed the rubber seems to trap dirt and grit at these points, as well, adding to the sandpaper affect. A major re-thinking of this by BMW should be in order, and a permanent fix for our cars, also. Hope they're reading this board. Even 21K is too early in a car's life for this kind of problem, especially when it's not on a normally high-risk area. Ah, well, flying the 'A' model is always interesting.

BCNU,
Rob in Dago

I checked mine out today while changing the oil and found it starting on my '03 with a mere 2083 miles.

I also found something more disheartening, look for the thread titled 'Missing frame bolts' .

Thanks for posting this Greatbear. Here's the actual post: http://www.bridger.us/mini/?Y=2003&M...=WhoaWhatsThis

As you can see there are lots of people who have this issue. I hope MINI is already working on a solution - otherwise they could have another coolant tank issue on their hands.

Looked at Peanut yesterday, and sure enough, the paint is worn off. Just turned over 4000 miles.

Is anyone doing anything about this problem? Should I worry?

I'm scheduled to meet with a regional MINI rep about this issue in a couple weeks. Hopefully he'll be able to tell me what MINIUSA's action plan is with this situation. I would assume it's being formulated now and there will be a retrofit of some kind to aliviate the issue.

At this point I think we should just be patient and see what MINI does. They have a track record of eventually dealing with these problems - I wouldn't expect them to leave us out in the cold so to speak.

4,000 miles and I've got wear down to the metal on both the driver and passenger side.
It's been a bad week for me.

Thanks for your answer, Gabe. I'll keep checking back both here and on your website.

MINI has a service bulletin on it and they are fixing the problem under warrantee.

If you check the underside of the bonnet on 2003's, you'll find they've added a plastic wear pad on each side. The fix for earlier models is to repaint the worn area and then add the new wear pad.

Mine's already been repainted and now I'm scheduled to go in for the pad add (they didn't have them in stock when the painting was done).

Have we sunk so low that we have started worrying about paint under the bonnet?
