Hey all,
Brought in my MCS w/ 34k on it today to have replaced :
1.leaky crank shaft seal
2. leaky oil pan gasket
3. front & rear rotors and pads

I expected the rotors and pads...(I had EBC redstuff pads and they probably were hard on the rotors)
but not the (2) seals.
Anyone else have any...seals that have ...leaked????

Peace,
D

Do you think your mods had anything to do with the seals breaking early?

Rules of Thumb: Overboosting blows out head gaskets, over-revving breaks connecting rods, and mileage wears out bearings.

Dennis having a leaky crank bearing means he either:
1) has a TON of miles, which is obviously not the case
2) the bearing was installed incorrectly (warranty) <---likely
3) the bearing material is crap (inherent design flaw) <---possible

Leaky oil pan gasket - yikes! We're not back in the days of the small block Chevy again, are we?

Where I come from all British cars leak. That's how you can tell that there is still oil in them.

Did you have to pay for the rotors or was this covered on warranty?

Dennis,

My MINI had the front rotors and pads replaced at the 2nd scheduled servicing.

As it was explained to me the fronts wear out twice as fast as the rears. My rear pads were still within spec, so they left the rears alone. If the pads or the rotors are out of their allowable limit, both parts will be replaced together.

I had 2 seals replaced last summer. One was main seal, forget the other one. All I know is it was a big job.

Thanks Dave,

I actually replaced the orig pads at about 15K .
I put on EBC redstuff... which in hindsight.... seemed to have worn my rotors more than... I expected them to.
My car is currently @ 34k so I was pleased on (2) counts:...
1. that they replaced the front rotors and pads ...even though I had aftermarket pads on.
2. I got in under the wire as far as the 36k ...limit for free stuff

I'm try'n to convince them now...that my rear rotors & pads are currently worn enough to warrant ... replacement.

Peace,
D

Dennis,

36k only ends your free regular maintenence (oil changes). You have until 50k for warranty items like these worn rotors.

as he just called to get me in on tuesday am to do the rear brakes and rotors...
to get it in b4 the free maintenence expires according to him.
????.... strange huh

btw...they are even nice enough to give me a car for the day

Peace,
D

d-mini-ero,
I am going in this Wednesday to have the crank seal replaced and a new serpentine belt installed with tensioner pulley. I thought I had a waterpump going out but, it was the belt slipping (slight worbling sound at idle). They noticed the minor leak and wanted to replace it and the belt.
Additionally, they will be replacing the entire steering rack due to a slight drag on low speed turns. (felt like wheel bearings going to me). Hope to be in tip top shape again.
By the way my brake pads were at 8MM front and 9MM rear and the rotors were nearly "new" (immesurable difference) after Inspection I last week.

I don't understand why they would cover consumables like brake pads and rotors under the 50K warranty (except for premature wear, etc.).

Or are consumables like these just covered during the prepaid maintenance period?

(I need to RTFM about warranty and prepaid maintenance one of these days...)

This is the 1st vehile I've owned that I actually had to have a crank seal replaced.
It seems to be fine now... but time will tell...I guess.

Are they just replacing the belt????

The entire steering rack should be a project ...???
Did you "feel" a noticeable drag???

Brakes and rotors life cycle depend on persoanl driving habbits.
I use the gears more than brakes

Peace,
D

d-mini-ero,

Do you have a 15% pulley? I was just wondering how cool the dealer would be with working on a car with this sort of issue that has a pulley...
