Paint Problem!

The hood on my '02 began to bubble about a year ago. Really thought nothing of it. Now this is what it looks like.

That's sad - did you try Scratch-X? Sorry, not a joking matter.
Looks like time for a bonnet re-paint.

I think that is probably the area of the bonnet with the most stress, perhaps that had something to do with it and the fact that the factory painter was drunk that day. I hope it doesn't cost that much to get just the bonnet repainted - that is why I didn't get a clear bra; figured it was cheaper to get the bonnet repainted than pay for the clear bra.

Mine isn't quite that bad...I started what I didn't think would be a MASSIVE project the other day. I filled in the paint chips from that area of the bonnet. I counted 55 stone chips in the right quarter of the hood...that was how far I got before I got frustrated and gave up. There are probably 150 more...

On some of the bigger ones, the paint around it has cracked and bubbled. It isn't quite that big. I do have a large chip about half that side in the front middle that I will be painting over. That should be fun! A lot of touch up paint, a lot of wet sanding and a lot of polishing compound!

Good luck!

looks like it was caused by crack in the basecoat from an impact.

No waaaay...there is no impact point visible. It does look like there are stress marks in the crease next to the housing though. It might of started there. Top one......

yep hes right. IT all started off a little tiny rock chip from the freeway. Then water got into it and bubbled it. Then they broke open in the heat! Sad but true!

We have a 2002 MC Pepper white/Black and the paint after 4 and a half years is still in excellent condition.

Paint delamination is very, very , very rare in these cars (unlike American cars of the '80's and '90s notorious for botched factory paint jobs).

probably your car is already out of the 4 year warranty, but I would take it to the dealer to have it looked at. I don't know much about the corrosion warranty but I have a feeling this problem could still be covered under the terms of the body corrosion warranty.

Check your warranty booklet and see what it says.

Tell my German-born BMW that. The first 4 months I had it the paint on the front bumper started to delaminate the clear coat. BMW wouldn't pick up the tab. Nonetheless...the BMW is getting a bodykit replacing the bumper.
