Seat help, and door locks

This is somewhat arcane, but how can you tell if the seat is all the way down? My muscle-bound brother borrowed the keys (mistake), and after 5 minutes declared he could not fit in the car. After this incident, I noticed a crunching sound as I tried to put the seat down; attempting to compare it to the passenger seat did not help. Any suggestions?

By the bye, does anyone know how to work on door locks without dealer help? The driver door lock will lock, but not open with the key fob or the inside switch.

When you say put the seat down, do you mean the back of the seat or the seat of the seat?

In reference to your other problem, it sounds like a bad door lock actuator. They are notorious for breaking...why there isn't a recall on them I can't understand.

Seat down

Oh, I meant the lever on the left side of the driver's seat that moves the seat up and down. Maybe there is a TSB on the door.

Hi, MCSNewOrleans. Not too many locals around here. Sorry to hear about the problem - long way to BHarris, but hopefully still under warranty....wish I knew an answer for you.

I guess I'd use the passenger side seat as a reference, and lower that one all the way down. Then you can compare it to the height of the driver's side to see if it is bottomed out or not.

I can't tell you how many people get into my MINI and start cranking on that lever while pushing back, apparently thinking it is the forward positioning adjustment!

i just finished repalcing my door lock latch unit, one day i could not lock or unlock my door or open or close it, i think this is unsafe if i had an occupant and an accident occurred. i called a local shop, to replace withservice would have been 400 usd. i bought the unit i needed to replace and waited about a month or so till i picked it up. in the mean time i tried to find info on diagrams ans such to no avail, finally one day i managed to open the door with the screwdriver, so then i picked up the part and proceeded to replace it with no diagram, man i can see why it cost so much, i took the seat out/moved, so i could get door panel off and get to the super tight place, any way 4 hours later, i was able to replace the unit and test it, apparently it is computer controlled and some how it went bad, i could manually lock and unlock, but the computer would not activate it, if you have the time and are patient, it can be done, i did not want to pay 300 usd to have someone else do it, i may have to take the door panel off to adjust the lock pop up ****, i will take some pics, but getting pics inside the door will be something, it was a fun frustraing challenge, but overall i am glad i save the money.
