External temp. sensor broken

I changed the radiators hoses on my 05 MCS and upon reassembling everything, including putting the front bumper and temp. sensor gauge back on the sensor doesn't work! it shows crazy numbers, I've tried unplugging, replugging it etc. etc. and nothing works.

I find it odd that it could have broken just unplugging it, anyone encounter problems w/ the external temperature gauge?

The system my need to re-calibrate itself, taking perhaps a little more time than it had...just a thought.

What ever happened to your temperature sensor? I accidently forget to reconnect mine after having the bumper cover off. It came up as -40 f which reminded me that I had disconnected it. After pluggin it in and out about 50 times I gave up and went for a ride. As I drove, the sensor started to come up slowly until it eventually reached 76 f which was reasonably right. I think it just needed to have some air moving acrossed it so it could recalibrate.

I hope someone knows the answer to this one. I'm having the same problem. Where exactly is the sensor located? What is even funnier, when it rains or I wash my car the auto air messes up and blows heat unless you have it on the auto setting.

The sensor is in your front bumper, on the right hand side (from the drivers seat) I believe. And the reason your auto climate control goes on after a wash or rain is because the sensor is probably getting wet, with the colder water. Which means that it is reading a colder water temp. Then as it dries it gets back to reading the warmer air temp. (Just my guess)

Yes, it is located behind the lower front grill on the driver's side. Mine went haywire about a year ago after catching a stone hit that pushed in the grill. I got a new one from the dealer and plugged it in. It's been fine ever since. Once they stop working, I think your only option is to replace it.

Big Daddy is correct. Just to the right of and just behind the plastic grille (when standing in front looking at the MINI. If you're really good, you'll find that removing two torx screws and two machine screws will loosen the bumper cover just enough to pull the top out making it possible to reach down inbetween the cover and the aluminum bumper and change the sensor. Be careful with the plug as they are delicate and easy to snap off the retainer clip. (yeah, I did).
