Can anyone owning a MCS tell me if they've noticed a clunk shifting into second? Nomatter how gently i do it, it sounds like metal on metal bangin together... One day it's there, the next it's gone, and it's only when shifting from 1-2, or 2-1. If it was one of my old old Trabants i'd know what to do, but this car is a little to high tech for me to be taking it apart... Any ideas? :???:

Either people here don't like me, they aren't having this problem, or they're not smart enough to notice it... hmmm

Tollag,
I spent some time drive DaveInDenver's S and did not notice the problem you mention. My S should arrive in about three weeks. I'll be sure to follow up if I notice something.

After 2 months and 5k miles I've had no such problem. Sounds like a trip to the dealer is in order. MB

My dealer is an hour away, and I really don't want to part with my baby! I guess I'll just keep driving it until the tranny either falls out from under the engine, or unil I lose first and second gear!

Actually, I think this is more common then mentioned. I have 3000+ miles on my S and I do hear some "clunking" from 1st to 2nd. Especially when I've just started her in the morning.

I read on other forums of similar occurences. I believe it is perfectly "normal".

Tollag, you're up in Maine, right? Try calling Gary King at MINI Peabody and see if he can offer some advice over the phone before you make the long trip to MA. He's really up on the latest info. on MINI's and he's been a huge help whenever I contact him. He's a great guy and goes above and beyond the call of duty to ensure top service. His number is 978-536-0088. Good Luck!

P.S. He's also a regular visitor to this site so he may even contact you directly.

I also notice/hear a clunking noise when shifting from 1st to 2nd during the first 5 minutes of driving when it has sat for a couple of hours. Sounds like the linkage.

No, doesn't seem like it's the linkage... It's something else... something more costly, something that is going to make me regret buying another foreign car... especially one with a parrent company named B M W . . .

I have the clunk as well. 1st to 2nd only, and only after just starting it. not from from every red light. What is it???

There was mention of this in a review. This is the second Getrag transmission I've had and I think they are all a little clunky. I wouldn't worry about it. I had a standard Coop before the S and put 5800 miles on it and it spent some time on a flatbed stuck in neutral

Had a very similar situation when I took delivery of my (then new) 2000 Golf GTI VR6. It finally did it when the dealer was test driving it. They tore apart the transmission, replaced several parts, and all of a sudden it's PERFECT. Don't assume "they all do that" if your tranny misbehaves. Problems in the transmission usually only get WORSE, with time. If you have a good dealer, they'll make it right.

I don't have any problems or hear any "clunking" between shifts and I have 2750 miles on my MCS, picked up back on June 15th.

I have a 'klunk' from 1st to 2nd most of the time, and sometimes 2nd to 3rd... You mean this is NOT normal?? I like that sound...

Oh well, i'll give it a little time before I ask the dealer... I don't have time not to have a car right now... and hey, i'll be under warantee(sp?) for a while...

You can't pop this clutch in second gear, and expect smooth transitions. She needs to be gently persuaded, if you don't want to lose your lunch. Are you experiencing this during the shift, or clutch engagement?

For me it's when the gear is engaged, ie: when I physically move the stickshift, the klunk is in no relation to the clutch...
