Diagnostics Tester Fault

I was driving the 04 MCS two days ago and the Service Engine light came on. I plugged in my portable little Diagnostics tester and it came up with the Fault L1030.. looking in the code book for the tester is states "O2 Sensor Circuit." I reset it to see if it was a flaw.

Today I was driving into work and the Service Engine Light soon came on again. I hooked up my little tester again and got the same fault.

Has any of you come across this fault or know how to go about troubleshooting it? I am sure there are at least two 02 sensors so I dont want to order and change the wrong one if that is the case. It says circuit in the Fault Description.. this is not anything to do with the ECU is it?

Both O2 sensors are the same. They're terribly expensive (175.00)

I had this and checked to make sure all of the O2 wires were tight, sure enough there is a connection next to the engine block (to the right of the oil cap when looking from the front of the car that was terribaly loose. THat went away, and I had an O2 sensor issue for about 2 months, that went away and I was running too rich for a few weeks, but inly in stop and go traffic, then I left FL for a little while and haven't seen the SES since.

^^^^^This is what happens when the dealer keeps delaying when they can see you.

That price is nuts for a small sensor.. but have to fix it. Is there a good way to tell which one of the two is bad.. other than playing the swap the sensor game. I am more of the fix it right the first time kinda guy.

I am new to the New Bini S as I have been working and running several classic minis for years.. would you be able to tell me where these sensors are located? Motor On said one was to the right of the oil cap on the engine.. I am going to take a guess that the other is on the exhaust pipe somehwere.. or on the manifold? I have not had a chance to look under the hood as of yet to find the sensors. I will definately check the wiring "Motor" would really be nice to have a quick fix like that. Thanks for the help.

What I mentioned was the connection for the sensor, the senors are at the end of the exausht manifold (pre-precat) and one post cat. You have the sensor circuit issue, which is different than a sensor issue alone. So I'd be checking wires and connections first. Also some have had dirty sensors in which case the pull the sensor out clean it and put it back in no issues.

You should get a Bank/Senosr reading with the code if a sensor is bad.

Excellent thanks for the info. I will check the wiring and get back to you all if the problem persists. I will also clean the sensors as well. Tell me if I am wrong but these 02 sensors are static sensitive am I correct? Will just have to clean them very carefuly.

I was told to use a carb choke cleaner and be sure not to get anything into the sensor also reminder to put some anti-seze on the threads. I never actually had to do it. One thing that may help is if you are under warranty and ethier still have the code stored or can get it to come back, go to the dealer and have it taken care of for free, plus you have a record if there is an issue down the road, but you need the light for them to fix it.

Calling it a Bini (a very dirty and derogetory term) is not going to get you a lot of love in some circles.

Lol Dominic... if it makes you feel better I have 4 Classic Minis and one 04 BMW MCS. I sold my other vehicles so that I could be an all around Mini fan.

Thanks all for the input on my problem. Good picture TH... that helps for component location.

The connectors are tricky to get apart from the mounting parts. The secondary O2's connector is on the underside of the car. The primary O2's connector is on the driver's side of the engine. Once you get the connectors separated from the mounting parts, the two O2s are identical.

Prior to removal spray the threads with something like PowerBlaster and let it soak in for a bit before attempting to unscrew the O2s. The O2 tend to stick in the piping really well.

You can get parts from a supporting vendor,
Classic Auto Campus is your OEM parts source for the MINI. We deliver only original OEM parts at prices significantly below retail. Mention North American Motoring and get in-stock items at 20% over cost and special order items at 20-30% below retail.

Do you have a website address for that site Norm? Wishful thinking that I will sort it at low expense but would be nice to look into this site for future reference if parts are needed.
