2005+ How to Reset Oil Change Counter!!?
2005+ How to Reset Oil Change Counter!!?
I have searched for the answer, but the only results are for Pre 2005 Models.
How do you reset the Oil Change Counter?
I change my oil every 3000 miles, but I never knew how to reset the counter. I am now -2500 miles and wouldn't want to void any kind of warranty due to this false indication of neglect.
Thanks in advance!

- Press & Hold "Trip Button"

- Release "Trip Button"
At this point the center display goes into "Test Mode".
Any other takers?
If you're still in Warranty (and you are unless you drive 24x7) have the dealer do a change since you're over the limit. Or are you so far from a dealer that it is not practical?

I remember talking to a MINI technician about this and he said since MINI do your oil changes for free for the first xx,xxx amount of miles, so they set the frequency of services to a minimum. I just don’t feel comfortable doing the bare minimum for my MINI.

Here’s what I did:
- Press & hold the “Trip Button”
- Turn Key to “Position 1”
- Keep holding the “Trip Button” until the “test” displays changes to the “oil service” display. (e.g. “51A; oil service –2675 miles”)
- Press & hold the “Trip Button” until “rst” pops up and starts blinking.
- Press the “Trip Button” once more and release
- The oil service display should now show an “inspection” countdown instead of an oil service countdown.
- That’s it.
I hope this procedure is correct, since I was trying to attempt this numerous times until I finally got it.
Thank you to everyone for your time. Your help is greatly appreciated!

Question about resetting oil change indication

Good question. I autocross religiously every month and take a canyon road every day to work, so I would consider these conditions to be harsher than “normal” driving. And I guess out of habit, I am so used to changing the oil for all of my previous vehicles at 3000mi.

Yes! The main trick is to hold the button until it says “51A; oil service –2675 miles”. This would probably be different depending on how long you wait to do this. Normally when you hold the button, then turn the key to position 1, the “test mode” activates instantly. But you have to keep holding until the oil service mode displays.

I change the oil every 5,000. This is the first time I have reset the counter because I'm out of free oil service. Followed these instructions and it now says "miles inspection 15500"
Is that right? or should it refer to oil change?

Why change the oil?
To keep it clean.
I feel that means that oil out should be the same color as oil in, because then I know I'm not pumping through oil that is overly contaminated with dirt. On my last car this meant every 2700 miles I was changing oil, and I got about 20k more miles out of that car than most had expected it to last. Clean oil means the engine runs smoother and longer, if I keep it clean from day one then I know that I'll still have a smooth running MINI ten and fifteen years from now. You can push the limit of service and break-in on a new car and not have to deal with the damage done until a few hunded thousand miles later, some folks don't care about that, I do. Plus fresh oil improves MPG. Mobil has their longest life oil at 5k, and its a full synthetic; I don't trust Castrol for 15.5k miles.
15k for me is changing the brake fluid, coolant, etc.
