Need help from Gurus!!

Hi Motorers

I drove from Montreal to Miami and near Miami, something scary happened...

At a stop, my temp. needle went all the way up and the red light started to bling.

I stopped my car and let it cool a bit. Meanwhile, I scanned my ECU codes with my OBD2 scanner.

3 Codes came up : The usual 0234 (overboost conditions), and 2 others that I can't find the meaning anywhere.

0691 and 0693.

So I have 2 questions:

- What can cause the engine to overheat ? (the temps stayed normal after that, and I had 2 hours left to drive)

- What does those 2 OBD2 codes means : 0691 & 0693 ?

Thanks for any help!

I did a quick search on Google, and came up with a "low-voltage on radiator fan" code...

Does that mean that my rad fan is dead??

Check fuse F05 in the underhood fuse box. If it's blown, you probably lost your power steering fan.

lol what a great timing! I did several searches on NAM and found out it could be my PS fan fuse that was blown... Since it's late, and I drove a lot today, I'll check it tomorrow morning.

But where's the "underhood" fusebox ? It's late and I want to make sure I'll be all set to check everything tomorrow morning lol... Is it right next to the ECU? (I included a picture of my engine, so if anyone would like to point it me... )

BTW, FORGET that red arrow on the picture, it's the same picture I use on my Boost Gauge how-to thread !!

Also, here's what I found from my searches... So if anyone has the same problem as me, it might help in the future!

** Sorry, I don'T remember the member's ID of who posted it, so credits goes to ??... lol ** ---> CREDITS TO GREATBEAR!!

Check fuse F05 in the underhood fuse box, most likely it's blown. This is caused by failure or blockage of the power steering cooling fan under the car. It's a 5 amp fuse (the only 5amp fuse there). Run the car with the air conditioning on. The fan should run. Pop in a spare fuse (a spare can be found in the under dash fuse box; spares are arranged vertically along the edge of the fuse panel) and see if the fan starts. In many cases it will, but if the fuse blows immediately once again, the fan for the power steering has experienced a complete failure.
This is a known, ongoing problem with MINIs. Even the redesigned fan that was installed in '04 and later cars and is used as a replacement is not immune. A screen was added to prevent picking up certain objects, but the fan still suffers from water and dirt damage, depending on driving conditions

In your photo, it's between the airbox housing and the driver's side strut tower, in front of the master cylinder. F05 is the only 5 amp fuse in the box. On cars without an aftermarket CAI it's between the ECU and the tower (your ECU gets enclosed by the CAI shroud).

The arrow is pointing to the wiper motor bracket.

lol Thanks a lot Greatbear! (I've edit my post to give you the credits! lol)

I know the arrow points to the wrong place... I took this picture from my Boost gauge how-to thread... lol

You seem to know a lot of stuff about those MINI, so let me ask you one last question :

Why did the Check Engine Light did not come up, and I was able to read 2 codes related to that with my OBD2 scanner??

This same problem happened at AMVIV to me. Power steering fan went. I have a 02 s mini. Replaced fuse and then it blew again about an hour later as i was on my way to dealership. They replaced fan and thermostat. I also had those same codes thrown but could not find what they meant. I drove all they way from tahoe to vegas with bad fan i think. Glenn

That sounds scary... My MCS is out of warranty... I hope it's only the power steering fan that got caught...

Worst case, it would cost me a PS fan and a fuse...

If the rad fan is broken, it will cost a lot more!

Check Engine Light only comes on with emission related faults.

Thanks

But, do we agree on the fact that the CEL should be use for other problems as well... ?

The ECU knows something goes wrong, but keeps it hidden...

There are conditions that can be picked up by the OBD II readers known as 'pending codes' which have not met all the criteria to set the check engine light. In the case of overheating, it was only a temporary condition, yet has registered with the system. In the case of a stuck open thermostat, the engine would have to run 'cold' for a long length of time before it is determined that indeed the engine is running cooler than usual and not being operated, say, in cold wet weather for an extended time. Some conditions will throw a code instantly (sensor failure, timing instability, etc), others will be 'observed' by the ECU for consistent out-of-parameter operation before they are determined to be true faults. It's the pending codes that are 'hidden', but can be scanned with an OBD reader.

The CEL comes on for many reasons other than emissions.

can you give me an example? I don't remember there being any codes that lights up the CEL unless it's emission related.

**updates**

This morning I checked the fuse, and it was indeed blown. After putting a new one, the power steering fan worked, but not the radiator fan, even with the A/C on. I got my MCS in at Laudedale MINI and it turns out that the fans are dead...

It's a 3 hours job, and the fan itself is 250$... Ouch! Total cost of this MINI adventure : 640$us...

P0300 (random misfire) and it's associated P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304 cylinder specific misfire will throw your car into limpmode and light the lite.
