It seems the most respected installers in the MINI-mod industry recommend 15%, in fact some of them won't install anything with more reduction. There are heat related complications in the intercooler and the supercharger, supercharger RPM issues, belt issues, fuel mix issues, detonation issues and peak efficiency issues that all come into play...

That said, we do have friends here with 17%, 19% and other >15% combination reductions who have not had problems, based on their posts anyway. That isn't taking into consideration the other mods they have made, but there is a large degree of satisfaction. So, everyone has to make their own call based on what the car is needed for and what other mods are going to be made.

If you don't feel at risk at the bleeding edge going with higher reductions, do it, have fun and enjoy it. Otherwise, take the advice of the big names and stay with 15% -- it does have the best reliablity track record of the bunch.

The installer I went to (Steve of Steve's Auto Clinic in North Hills, Calif.) listened to me describe what I need the car for and recommended 15% or 17%. I waffled between them, then he mentioned that he often encounters detonation with 17%, even with cold plugs, and that took care of it for me, I went with 15%.

It also is important to consider what you're doing here; you're changing a whole system -- how the car breathes. Steve suggested, and I went along with getting a whole system mod -- cold air intake, 15% reduction pulley, colder plugs and a less restrictive exaust system -- and I gained about 25 or more hp at the wheels with the whole set of mods. From both a performance and an auditory point of view, I've been very happy with this approach.
