New flywheel, old clutch

Yesterday the dealer put in a new flywheel under warrenty. However, now the clutch chatters, is this normal? The car is also more difficult to shift, so it is going back for that.

Are you saying that they replaced the flywheel and left in the old clutch plate, pressure plate and throwout bearing?????
If so, that's a very big mistake on their part.

Thats my understanding. I was going to replace the clutch when they had the flywheel out because that would have saved me the labor later. But now it chatters.

Why do you say its bad? I am just waiting for the dealer to call me and ask how i liked my service, MINI USA should also be calling soon.

Double check your copy of the RO.
I had the flywheel replaced in my black car, per TSB. They also changed the clutch.
Onasled is stating that it's a big mistake because you should not run a used clutch disc on a new flywheel, it's just bad practice. Besides, if they have all that apart why wouldn't they replace the clutch assembly?

My flywheel/clutch was done at no charge to me.
The MINI tech that works on my car is a friend of mine, maybe that had something to do with it.

Why was the flywheel replaced in the first place?

Um, it was loose or something, they just told me that is what was causing the grinding noise on startup.

My 03 flywheel was replaced under warranty. I offered to pay for new clutch and they put it in for additional parts cost of $300. Only 30,000 mi. on the old clutch and it did not seem worn much but I thought it was the right thing to do. I asked about retrofitting the LSD and said it is not sold separate. If I gave them a Quife to install, the charge would have been 7 hours (@ $130) to split the gearbox. I did not do this.

I actually had not noticed a problem with the flywheel, but they thought there was a problem. I complained of excessive play in the drive train, maybe CV joints but they did not think so, instead identifying the flywheel as bad.

No complaints here.

Well, car is back in the shop. Third time in a month of ownership. If it wasnt used i would be keeping everything just incase its a lemon.

Went to start the car up this morning to take it to the dealer and the orignial grind is back. Currently I am very disapopinted with the dealer, hopefully they can get it all worked out and i can be on my way.

On a side note, i really like the 05/06 transmission, the car accelerates much faster than my 03 did before pulley. Its not that much slower, i dont feel, than mine with pulley

They did replace only the flywheel for me the first time i complaint about some noise from shifting gears. after that i complaint again cuz the noise still around, and they replace the flywheel again and the clutch assembly. my question is, what is the clutch assembly? is that mean they replace me with a whole new clutch? thanks

Well, I got a call from the dealer. After 5 days with the car, and admiting there was noise, all they did was drain the master cylander and fill it back up. Said in hine site, they should have changed the clutch at the same time. I have 4500 miles left on the factory warrenty. If when i pick it up it is still hard to shift, ill give it a week, then it goes back. When MINI USA calls to fallow up, i am going to mention what the dealer said....and also mention the fact it took 5 days to bleed the system.

About 1 month ago I started to hear a rubbing noise or a grinding noise when i take off from a start position.
I brought my mini in to get serviced and mentioned the noise to them.
They heard the noise as well, but had no clue what it was.
The dealership then put a request to Mini-Canada to find out what the problem may be.
2 weeks later i get a call from my dealer stating that they are going to change my Clutch and My Flywheel under warrantee.
Anyone have a similar situation to that?? I wasnt expecting a brand new clutch and flywheel!!!

No worries, the 2-piece flywheel has springs to dampen vibrations. The problem lies in the springs themselves-they are weak & the flywheel chatters as a result. There is a bulletin to replace the flywheel (21-??-03, the number escapes me-too many beers after Parti Gras!), though the clutch is often affected adversely by this as well. The pressure plate can have high spots caused by the chattering, so the correct repair is to replace them both.

If you've ever given thought to upgrading the flywheel and/or clutch, now is the time to do it as MINI will pay for the labor. Just bring your parts in (UUC flywheel & clutch are nice-I've seen them first hand) prior to the replacement. Ask to speak to the tech who is doing the work if your SA isn't keen on doing upgrades.

I offered this to several folks when I was at a dealer, and it worked great. Lots of happy folks. Just make sure you have all parts ready to go prior to so they (the techs) aren't held up. Cheers!

Well, looks like a month of being in and out of the dealer is coming to and end.

After a call to MINI USA I went dropped my car off at the dealer last night so it could sit in the cold, as the noise is more predictable in the cold. I went out to start it up with the shop foreman, three times in a row i was able to duplicate a sound they couldnt. I was just glad it happend and was consistant. Turns out it wasnt my flywheel, but my starter. So, sense the clutch is now a problem, and it wasnt before, i get a new clutch too! Yeah! New clutch, flywheel and starter!
