Window motor on drivers side
Window motor on drivers side
my drivers side window does not work anymore, it is in the most upright position so that when i try to close the door it gets caught on the upper sill. when i press the the down or up button, it just makes a clicking sound for second, coming from the motor, (like when you try to move the window up when its already closed) i took off the inner door and didnt see anything stopping it from moving. does anyone have any troubleshooting help before i schedule an appointment? Think its a sticky sensor?
I've had both window motors & door locks replaced over the latter part of 2005... not all at the same time. My driver's side window was stuck in the "cracked" position, so I didn't have trouble closing the door. However, the driver's side window will now sometimes fail to "crack" & it's rather unpleasant when closing the door (happens maybe 1 of 75 times). The switch functions fine, so I just bring it down, close the door & put it back up. Definitely something to have dealt with on my next dealer visit. Good luck to you.
The problem is caused by carbon build-up on the stator of the motor. This is
a rather common problem and one which I experienced myself last Friday.
The ultimate fix is to either pull the motor, disassemble it, and clean the
stator or to replace the motor.
In the meantime, though, you can turn the key to the second position,
hold the window switch down, and give the inner door panel a couple of serious
whacks with the bottom of your fist (between the two speakers). Then
release the window switch and pusgh it up and down a couple of times.
It freed mine up and hopefully will do the same for yours.

As Pete says - the "thump the door panel" technique works well. Just try to coordinate hitting the door panel (just below the little speaker) t the same moment that you click the window switch down.
It should free up the motor for at least a few days ... but eventually you will need a new motor; hopefully you have a bit of warranty left.

I cannot claim perfection in any of the MINIs I have owned - but all have been fabulous to drive/own/etc. I have previously owned for example a Lexus that had leaking transmission oil, and a Chrysler that had paint so thin it almost fell off if you looked at it.
