No 2nd gear

Im driving home from school today and i go to shift in to second and soon as it rest in the gear it would just throw it out , and it doing it all the time now. I have noticed in the last about week that 2nd gear has been kind of hard for me to get in to some times and you could hear the gears scraping together, i do not know if thats what did it or what. I called and made an appointment for tommorow at the dealer ship, i really dont want this to be blamed on me seeing on how i could do this to the tranny. I would understand if the whole tranny stopped all together, any advice for the morning?

I had a 1990 honda civic and the bearings went bad on a trip. Had stopped at a rest area and heard a weird clunk as I shut down. The bearings in all gears but 5th had froze. I was still 200+ miles from home. Thankfully the rest area was on top of a hill and had a LONG down hill run as the entrance to the interstate. A trucker and a biker helped by pushing me back out and then forward towards the hill. Just as I was about to merge into traffic I popped the clutch and the engine fired. I got less than 20 miles from home, found a gas station with a phone as close to the exit as possible. Rolled down the exit ramp threw in the clutch and coasted as far as I could. Used the pay phone and got a tow.

Big toe or pinky?

Oh, tow!

Just kidding.

CNred - is your car still under warranty? It may be nothing more than an adjustment needed on the linkage, but I don't think they can blame it on you. Please let us know how it turns out.

Actualy I have a broken RIGHT foot Bone between the pinky toe and the ankle. Can't drive a manual right now. No communication between the throttle and the foot that works the throttle.

Funny stuff goes on inside trannies. I had a Datsun that had a problem in one gear. The bearing retaining ring had broken a rivet and curled out into that gear. Everything else worked, just the one gear made nice crunchy sounds. Once I got it apart I replaced that gear and did all the bearings for good measure (hey, if one was bad...). It was probably $100 in parts, where a junkyard tranny was $200, but the experience was priceless. However, I don't recommend this approach if you need the car for immediate transportation!

Sounds like the synchros or the dog teeths in second gear are wornout. When you shift into gear and as soon as you let off the clutch, it pops the shifter out. Or sometimes its hard to get it into that gear. Do you have stock clutch set up? Short shifter?

if the synchros are bad, would double-clutching help?

Sounds like a bad gear. From the symptoms you describe, it sounds to me like you might have an issue with the synchro that led to either a chipped gear or rounded gear teeth. When you drive, do you rest your hand on the shifter? Usually stuff like this happens either from power shifting or repeated shifts that are fast enough to beat the synchro.

Unless there is something broken internally that has nothing to do with shifting, prepare yourself for a claim that you did it. That claim might or no might not fly, so just be ready for it.

Good news, its covered under warranty . The bad news is that i have to wait until friday evening to get my car back, but that is a whole lot better than paying 2,000 or whatever it costs to get a new one.

Time to buy an LSD and get the dealer to install it. Maybe they will warranty that modification, too.

i got my car back and the tranny feels so different, its a lot more firm, probally like it should have been the whole time. the bad news is that i did not go to pick it up so i do not know the exact problem, my guess is the sycrho.
