05 MCSa Exhaust not as 'loud' as manual car?
05 MCSa Exhaust not as 'loud' as manual car?
We have about 400 or so miles on our new MSCa. So far, to me, the exhaust just doesn't seem quite as loud as the MCS that we test drove at the dealer. It has a little rumble, but I was expecting more. Granted, I drive a turbo miata with a free-flowing 2.5" turbo back exhaust...but still!
My thoughts on it are this:
1) we are not taking it past 4500 yet...she will be a bit louder up top.
2) It needs to loosen up a little...once it's broken in it will gain a little noise
3) The auto's run a little quieter than the manuals...maybe a little less free-revving? (esp, on a clutch in....not as much burble...)
4) It needs a one-ball or a millitek!
any of these sound close to those who have made it past break in, etc?
thanks!

Service Measure M 18 200 04 9/27/04
Subject: Model Year 2005 MINI Cooper S Popping From Exhaust
Complaint: The vehicle exhibits an acoustic feedback of the exhaust system under the following conditions: Engine braking in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gear. Increasing engine speed above 3000 rpm while the vehicle is stationary
The popping noise from the exhaust system can also be described as a "backfire" from the engine.
Measure: Do not attempt to repair or replace any parts, this is not a failure of any driveline components. The acoustic feedback is a standard feature of the 2005 Model Year Cooper S vehicle produced as of 7/2004. This feature cannot be retrofitted to the previous model year vehicles.

Actually his complaint is quite the opposite. I have read about the MCSa not having as loud of exhaust as the MCS with manual transmission. I think this is an inherent trade-off of the Automatic model.

I have a supersprint exhaust(with center resonator) in my MCS right now and it's no where close to my old miata with enthuza.. The center resonator is coming off soon..
I'd say stock MCS exhaust is near silent compared to a miata, especailly since the car is a lot more sound-proof than a miata..
Try folding down the rear seats.. if it is still too quiet, it's time to get an aftermarket exhaust.

I think my MCSa exhaust is plenty loud. It rumbles and burbles just enough so you can hear it inside. The engine is more fun to listen to than the exhaust anyways. Get it above 3500rpm and it sounds fantastic.
