Mystery Ball Bearings

I have found about 12-15 well greased ball bearings on the garage floor under my 2002 MCS. They are about 1/2-3/4 the size of a pencil eraser. My car runs fine. No noise. Recently put on big brake kit but otherwise no mechanical work done lately. Has anyone had this experience? I have no idea where such bearings would be comming from. I am a little worried however. Any help would be appreciated.

I can't think of anything offhand that would eject smallish ball bearings without being accompanied by oil leaks, loud noises or performance changes.

Is this a garage area for your exclusive use? If not, it may have come from someone else's car, or perhaps a bicycle. Then again, similar things are sometimes done as a practical joke to get people wondering about their cars.

Check your floor jack, both rear casters have failed on mine.

Did you put the big brake kit on yourself in your garage?

I searched http://www.realoem.com extensively for ball bearings and such, and looked at all the wheel and brake components, but can't find any use of ball bearings. Try the same using your specific VIN#. Definitely nothing that could leap out of the car without disassembling something first.

As someone else suggested, check your floor jack and tools, assuming you did the BBK install yourself.

Not only is that funny, but it is especially hilarious that someone knew exactly what the problem was.

This board never ceases to amaze me with the wealth of knowledge shared!

Great News

Glad to hear it was nothing to worry about. Until the MCS I was allways driving around 15 to 25 year old cars with 200k+ miles and was constantly finding mysterious parts (primarily screws, nuts, bolts) under and inside the cars. Inevitably I would have to store the pieces because I couldn't find what they went to. Months later I would be fixing something and discover what the mystery part was too, by then I could no longer remember where I stored it!

Couldn't agree with YuccaPatrol more! Very funny (probably more so for us than for flashback) and amazing how quickly someone came up with the answer. I was thinking more along the lines of Greatbear, its just the type of thing my two daughters would love to pull on the old man!
