Is this part needed with Dinan Intake?
I recently installed my Dinan Intake and was looking at the parts left from the install and noticed that I forgot to put back this rubber piece that fit behind the plastic divider. What is it for on the stock air box? Not sure if it is needed for the dinan?
I got the parts used and it came w/ the plastic divider (the piece that fits on the firewall) already cut for the Dinan Top Air box part. I'm not sure the Dinan came w/ plastic part or not or you had to cut the stock piece for the cowl opening??
air hole
The bottom of the stock air box is the "dirty" side.
That rubber piece provides the connection between the air box and the cowl vent to let some SC noise get to the cowl area and air from the cowl get into the dirty side of the air box.

I like the Dinan better than the JCW because it does not have a flap and the air fillter design uses a standard hose clamp to attach to the air box. Looks like the air filter is similar to the K&N and can be cleaned and reused? Can anyone verify? As far as performance, I had the Alta prior this intake and just could not get use to the sound. The alta's part throttle intake sucking noise just did not agree with me but the WOT noise was OK. The Dinan is obviously quieter but at WOT the s/c whine is much louder thank stock. As far as performance, both the alta and dinan was noticeably better than the stock intake. I kept the Alta silicone hose and installed it w/ the dinan. I think this improves the performance of any intake.

I looked at just about every intake available and decided on the Dinan over the JCW because it's open all the time, unlike the JCW which opens at 4500rpm. Plus it looks factory.

Unfortunately, the filter is not a K&N oil & reuse type - it should be replaced every 10 to 15,000 miles at about $65. The good news is - so I hear - that there is a company who will be introducing replacement filters for both the Dinan and JCW, which can be reused.
i would put that gasket on....its to keep the engine heat out of the intake air way.......even though i msure your cut is right on n the space is very minimal.....we put that gasket there for a reason.
And you didnt hear this from me.......but yes you can use the K&N cleaning kit to recharge the filters.

Thanks in advance!
What looks like a paper filter?.....If you have a "paper filter" in the kit then they gave you something which isnt a Dinan cowl intake . they use a cone shaped ( K&N style ) filter....Nothing paper looking about it. It has blue oil on it instead of K&N's known red color.....That company says its a box when in fact its only the top of the box so i hope they didnt bs you , and you got something different.
That's good to know. I did get the bluish colored filter so you're probably right. Of course, the Dinan site doesn't tell you that you can clean the filter and reuse it. So, I guess at this point all I really need is a K&N cleaning kit and a few hours?
Since I've never had a washable filter before, how many times (typically) can you wash & reuse them before you have to toss'em?

The filter loooks like a K&N but it is not cotton like the K&N - it's oiled paper and it can not be cleaned and reused. I had an extensive conversation with the people at Dinan about this. They told me that their cone filters much better than a K&N but they should be replaced at service - $65 +/-
Thanks for the reply, Rick!
So, it seems there are two thoughts on these filters -- yes, they are reusable and no, they are not. Personally, it didn't look too reusable to me, but then again, I'm no expert on the subject.
Has anyone successfully cleaned and reused the filter? How many times would you think you could clean/reuse the same filter?
Anyone know of a 3rd party replacement?
